i think the complete writing off of rap, or any musical genre really, is really ****ing ignorant, and all around lame. there are revolutionary and otherwise interesting or aesthetically pleasing aspects to be found in every type of music. youve got to look past the uninspired drivel and find the true gems.

I'll have to take issue with all the generalisations about rap as well. Just as there's a great deal of rock that won't come on the radio, there is a great deal of rap that won't get played either. If you want something that was musically innovative, try DJ Screw, who pioneered an entire sub-genre, although I'll warn the lyrics may not be to your tastes. If you want something that isn't all about drugs or other negative stereotypes, try Atmosphere. Want something to be goofy and make you laugh, get something by mc chris.
If you just dislike what rap is (lyrics over a frequently repetitive beat, which does get old after a while), there's still plenty of good stuff out there. 2Raumwohnung, Amadou Et Mariam, Baba Zula, Corvus Corax, Diza Star & The Pink Ladies Blues, Einstürzende Neubauten, Frank Key, Garmarna, Hagalaz' Runedance, Infected Mushroom, Jon Sigurosson, Kawabata Makoto, Laibach, Mogwai, Niko Valkeapää, OM, Paavoharju, Qntal, Ragenheiður Gröndal, Sigur Rós, Terakaft, Udokotela Shange Namajaha, Van der Graaf Generator, Wael Kfoury, Xalam, Youssou N'Dour, Zaïko Langa Langa, Алексей Козлов and 梶浦由記. There, you've got one for each letter of the alphabet, and a couple of bonus groups. All are relatively recent, and I didn't even have to search for something outside my music players library.
It's not that hard to find good music. Maybe read reviews, and find someone you think you'd like. Get the CD. If you like it, look at the liner notes. See which bands they thank, and check them out. See what bands the group you like is touring with. If you wait for the radio to put on a worthwhile song, you'll be there for a while.

Ulsterman buddy I didn't call you a racist, or didn't mean to rather. You're the one who said "black music in general" and said you weren't racist. What did you mean? If you don't like music made by black people, then that would be a 'racist' musical standpoint by definition, as the music you're referring to is characterized by the race of the musicians. But I said "racist implications aside" because you mentioned that your comment implied racism, but that it's not the case. Fair enough. I don't care one way or another if you're a racist, that was intentionally not my point. I didn't want to start an argument or make you think I was calling you a racist, but instead wanted to point out that "black music" has been the single most poweful influence on all music in the last 100+ years, in my humble opinion. I didn't mean to get you all worked up about racism, but when you use terms like "black music in general", what do you expect?
To a few on you who've commented on it, what is "c rap"? Is that a clever way of calling it all crap or does C stand for something?

That's too bad. Sounds like you have some pretty strict limitations on what kind of music you do like. On the other hand, knowing what you are likely to prefer based on the nationality or race of the musicians would have its conveniences lol. You don't even like Bert Jansch? He's a hell of a guitar player.

Id like two say two things.
1) I do occasionally listen to rap but only when in a party type environment, for the beats not it's lyrics. Underground rap is really where it's at. My fav is probably immortal technique, he plays here in santa cruz all the time in Pacific ave.
2) All genres have something great to offer. I started this thread to just figure out peoples thoughts on the (what I see as) crappy music that gets mainstream play while older music or newer underground shit gets no play.
I like just about every genre of music but the billboard top 10 consistently reflect the Sgreger1's bottom 10.
2) Black music has been hijacked by rap, and people think that "black music" is rap because, well, that's what is promoted.
First, i'd like to say 2 words. Michael Jackson. Okay well maybe he's not black. But think about black music, real black music, with some soul in it, not the crap on the radio.
Does anyone remember The drifters, under the boardwalk, upon the roof. What about the entire disco scene lol. Really it's not even racial, it's about a generation that is void of any musical talent. They have done away with killer 10 minute long solos and iron maiden style album art and replaced it with Brittany Spears/paris hilton types, who really have nothing to add to society (let alone music).

lol I guess it's going to be another one of these threads. I don't think he meant he doesn't like any music from black people, just that modern black music that is promoted (rap) sucks.
I like rap sometimes but not really for it's musical value. It doesn't take you on a trip like van halen or make you want to just go **** some shit up like pantera, nor does it make me want to go blow an 8-ball of coke like the entire 80's music genre does, but it does have a great "going to the club" type beat to it.
No one genre was meant to do everything.

So, Ulsterman, you've basically done away with most major musical movements of the 20th century, so what inspired you to pursue a music degree? Are you just the type who listens to nothing but classical (in the sense of Baroque through Romantic, generalised category)? If you say techno, I'll have to reach through my cat5 cable and smack you, after calling the rest crap .
And I'm not being sarcastic, just wondering.
