I'm from California originally and spent over 10 years in Minnesota so I am not sure if I would be qualified to judge hickness :P

I will say that I've had a few "deliverance" type moments since moving to the glorious state of North Carolina.

I really should have bought an Appalachian English to English dictionary before I moved here though. I seriously thought that most everyone was speaking a different language when we moved in.

Aside from the adjustment of moving from a major metro area with over 5 million people to a town of 2,500, it has been pretty nice. Luckily no one calls me a yankee :P

Yah when I was living in NC the language barrier was rough, but there are parts of the country that are even rougher.

It's amazing how different the dialects are in different parts of the same nation.

I do hate how everyone sterotypes people in the south as inbred rednecks and unamerican "They tuk ur jerbs!" type people. Not that they don't exist lol.

Ainkor, yeah the mountain folk are different breed. There are many that haven't come down off the mountain in a long time.

Sgreger, the stereotypes get to me sometimes too. I mean I've even heard Okies stereotype North Carolinians, though Oklahoma makes the North Carolina look like California. The Triangle area (Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and surrounding areas) is actually pretty cosmopolitan for a Southern city.

I, however, am still stuck in Oklahoma. Mother Nature is being a bitch to me. The Christmas Eve blizzard of 2009 dumped 14 inches of snow on OKC, shattering the previous single day snowfall record of 12.1 inches. Combine that with an inch of sleet that fell prior to the snow and sustained winds around 25 mph gusting to 50 mph, and you get 5 ft. drifts and near-whiteout conditions. All of which means that Will Rogers World Airport was shut down yesterday. I was able to reschedule my flight to leave tomorrow at about 10 til 4 in the afternoon. The good thing is this one will be connecting at Hartsfield in Atlanta instead of O'Hare, so no chance of getting snowed in there.

Interestingly enough, we live pretty close to Asheville which is almost exactly like the city I grew up in California (Davis).

It's a pretty laid back town with a large arts community and a pretty good idie music scene.

Given the choice, we would rather live there but our kids are in high school and we want them to all graduate from the same place, if possible.

A new smoking ban in bars and restaurants went into effect in NC on Jan 2. Many of my friends are smokers and are hating it. While I don't necessarily agree with the ban, it doesn't bother me that much thanks to snus. Any of my fellow Carolinians have similar experiences?

BTW, the bar I was at on Saturday had Brad Benson playing. He kept commenting on how bad the ban sucked and how much Bev Purdue looks like the Joker. I never noticed before, but now I can't look at her without thinking "Why so serious?"

Although the ban slightly irritates me just on principal, it utterly and completely has NO impact on me in any real way thanks to my beloved snus.

I do smoke a pipe, but only smoke that at home, or when warm, outside at my local cafes.

On the other hand, I go to a bar occasionally to listen to some local music. And the only times in recent memory where I was suddenly badly lusting for cigarettes. So next time I am there, I imagine it will make me happy to not have to deal with that any more. As I happily snus the night away. :lol:

Yah if you go to Chappel Hill it looks like somewhere in the San Fernando Valley, CA, but due to the accent people will assume you live in a trailor park. Damn smug californian liberals.

As someone who never smoked much, I gotta say, I am glad they don't let you smoke in bars or indoors anymore (except casino's) here in CA.

If I had smoked, it would make me fiend a cig. Since I don't smoke, it is just obnoxious. However, it being private property, not sure if a state ban is appropriate but I am glad to be able to breath the clean air.
