Defragging the hard drive is good.

Is your graphics card good enough? Should be, but could cause problems if it is an onboard Intel graphics card.

    Your computer specs look ok.

    Updates for your browser important.

One thing I find with people that are not really computer savvy are startup programs, programs that take up resident memory that are not really needed. These are the programs that you see at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. You said that you did not have many of them, but there may be more hidden than you realize. I stop non-essential programs by clicking on the start button, then clicking on "run", then typing MSCONFIG. A window pops up. The tab labeled "start up" has all of your programs that start up when you turn on your computer. Some will seem obvious to you to deselect such as winamp, msmessanger and so on. To be sure that you should deselect an item "Google" it to make sure it is not a necessary program. This will free up some resources. This may be important since you do not have the recommended 2 gigs of ram that XP needs.

There is also a possibility that you can do a repair install from your XP disc that could fix possible registry problems. Not sure if that route will truly fix anything and might be too much of a pain to try. You could see if want to do it if you can find a good guide. The problem with doing a repair install is that it will set you back several service packs if you do not use an XP disc with service pack 3. So maybe not a good choice to try.

So what would I do besides what others have already recommended? Disable non-essential startup programs. Hell , you might disable some spyware that is causing some slowdown on your computer by doing this. It may fix a lot of your problems.

Thanks for all the replies, I have done most of them now, and it appears now that my problem has been fixed, or it seemed like it yesterday. The last think I did was update my Java, but that, and maybe a combination of all the other stuff I did, seems to have made the comp work much better, and the vids I looked at yesterday played fine. So thanks again. I'll refer to this thread again if needed.

I have a question, maybe someone can help me with.

I was searching online for an older unavailable movie from 1981. Well, I finally found it, on some bit torrent site, and DL'd it, and not it's an avi on my desktop, along with some other file, I don't know what that is. Now I can watch this on the computer. I DL'd Divx too, and it plays great on that. But I want to make this on a DVD for my personal collection.

So, my question is, how do I make this avi into an iso, so I can make a dvd of it? I have a program I use called Imgburn, which works great for making a dvd from an iso, but I could not get this program to convert the avi to an iso. I wasted 2 discs trying this.

Is there a good free program that will convert the avi to iso, so I can use the Imgburn and make a dvd of it?

        Thanks.

I was wondering if any of you more savy computer users might know a good free download I can use that would improve the performance and speed of the computer. I seem fine browsing sites and forums, etc, but when it comes to Youtube or streaming videos(yeah, that kind), it moves very slow and halts and has to buffer, and it's been a big irritant.

I don't have much running at all, and I cleaned up a bunch of old mp3 and stuff, thinking it was taking up space, but I don't think it was.

Maybe it's not the comp? I don't know. I have the free programs Spybot Search and Destroy, and avast!, and today I tried a couple of those registry fix downloads that have FREE FREE all over their site, then they do a scan, and fine a ton of "problems", but then they only "fix" a few, and want you to buy their stuff. Well, IF they really fixed my problem, I might buy, but I did 2 of them, free regestry fix was the last one, and I don't remember the other as I uninstalled it, but after a reboot, my issue with slow streaming video was not any better.

Any ideas? What do I need? What can I do? Is it the comp? The server?

I'm not an expert on this.

          Thanks.
You could try using peerblock when you're online, or the TweakNow PowerPack. Both are free. My top recommendation is a switch to Linux from windows/mac.

DVD Styler. you can get it on sourceforge. works in windows, but works better in linux. windows software is generally limited in it's ability to make playable dvds. cloneDVD may do it as well, but it's not free.

              run a search at sourceforge.net.
