Defragging the hard drive is good.
Is your graphics card good enough? Should be, but could cause problems if it is an onboard Intel graphics card.
Your computer specs look ok.
Updates for your browser important.
One thing I find with people that are not really computer savvy are startup programs, programs that take up resident memory that are not really needed. These are the programs that you see at the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. You said that you did not have many of them, but there may be more hidden than you realize. I stop non-essential programs by clicking on the start button, then clicking on "run", then typing MSCONFIG. A window pops up. The tab labeled "start up" has all of your programs that start up when you turn on your computer. Some will seem obvious to you to deselect such as winamp, msmessanger and so on. To be sure that you should deselect an item "Google" it to make sure it is not a necessary program. This will free up some resources. This may be important since you do not have the recommended 2 gigs of ram that XP needs.
There is also a possibility that you can do a repair install from your XP disc that could fix possible registry problems. Not sure if that route will truly fix anything and might be too much of a pain to try. You could see if want to do it if you can find a good guide. The problem with doing a repair install is that it will set you back several service packs if you do not use an XP disc with service pack 3. So maybe not a good choice to try.
So what would I do besides what others have already recommended? Disable non-essential startup programs. Hell , you might disable some spyware that is causing some slowdown on your computer by doing this. It may fix a lot of your problems.
