    Where has the privacy gone?

I was just informed by my brother in law about the site spokeo dot com.

    Not cool.

I searched my name on there and a lot of of my personal info was there including my address and telephone number. If you sign up and pay for it they will release credit scores and a whole host of other info to whomever searches your name.

I was rather irritated by the amount of info that site had on it. It also pulls from face-book and allows people to see your pictures and whatnot.

There is a privacy option at the bottom to remove yourself from there after you do the search and get all sorts of freaked out and (more)paranoid.

Wow thanks for the link. To be honest, anyone who uses the internet or specifically social network sights really should have to reasonable expectation of privacy.

I don't like that this site is out there but I will definitely be using it on my daughters boyfriends, give me the platinum membership bitches!!!

And always remember the golden rule.. the internet is forever.

          I hear ya sgreger.

The really scary part is my non-internet using parents are on there with a lot of accurate info.

I'm also pissed that my unlisted phone number was on there. I think that's what got me so riled up.

NEVER EVER sign your real name on an internet forum or anywhere else on the internet as someone will be able to Google you forever. I have a rare name so if anybody googles me - they get me and me only which is rather unfortunate.

Another thing which has been worrying me - I've had Facebook groups enabling me to be searched i.e. any entries I've made on the wall of these groups have ended up on Google somehow and I can assure you that all my settings on FB are correct.

If you see an entry to your name on Google search you can ask the site/forum owner to take your name off and then ask Google to take it off - this would be successful.

It is getting worrying - 123 people are doing this as well. I don't know how this has happened but if anybody googles my name and then double clicks the 123 people result - it even tells people where I live from the electoral register. Now I'm not at all happy about that because I've always been very careful about my personal information and I have never given that information on the internet.

Yah privacy is a thing of the past unfortunately. To truly live off the grid is nearly impossible nowadays if you want to have a family. Even people who don't use the internet are subject to some basic ways of datamining info, like their employers, who's records are public, and things like telephone numbers have never been private.

It's kinda just something we have to deal with that sucks, I don't see any way to enforce privacy in a world where information flows so quickly. Paper trails are inevitable nowadays. Sad, but true.

Thanks for the link. They are only 4 months behind on my address and think I still live with my parents who divorced 13 years ago when I was 18, but they still know too much:

I found that site a couple weeks ago and it was a little freaky to see so much info about myself. It wasn't totally correct, but it was right on the main points, even had pics of me come up when you put in my email address. I know they get all that from public places, but still...putting it all in one easy to find spot is just a little more than I'm comfortable with. Plus the way you can just pay for other info like wealth and credit rating is really scary.

Search for Sheila's photos & videos!
