Yes, just what we need more laws. Why are American so willing to give up their rights and personal freedoms? There are already laws on the books to prevent illegal immigration, we just don't care to enforce them. It is very rare, relatively speaking, to see an employer get arrested for hiring illegal immigrants and yet this is the source of the problem. Let's start enforcing the laws we have already rather than passing crappy legislation that makes it a crime not to carry ID? We screwed over our rights in the name of fighting terrorism and now we are doing it over immigration. Enough is enough. This is a free country and perhaps we need to hold the government accountable in doing the job we pay them to do.

It's true that there are plenty of laws regarding immigration that are not enforced but because a significant percentage of the political class does not want them enforced, for a variety of reasons, they are not. We have no way of "holding their feet to the fire" because "they" are not overly influenced by votes outside their districts much less conservative efforts to strengthen enforcement. Heavily hispanic districts usually have an equally heavy concentration of activists who are interested in keeping the southern border as porous as possible and they make a lot of noise with consequent influence on their representatives.
Also hispanics usually vote in overwhelming numbers for Democratic candidates and along with the noise from activists this translates into Democratic/progressive/liberal support for measures that will weaken border enforcement. This rather complex interaction seems embedded now in party politics and diminishing its influence is unlikely in the near future.
On the local level conditions may get so bad, as in Arizona, that activists and the outcry from progressive pols is insufficient to thwart measures to address the situation. Nationally however the Democrats are huffing and puffing about the measures and are issuing threats to supersede the new Arizona law with federal statutes. They will have a battle on their hands due to the recent dust-ups over the health care bill and immigration "reform" may not happen for a good while. I suspect the Arizona laws will be in place for a while until the federal mastodon stirs itself sufficiently.[/i]

That's exact what Arizona did, they passed an enforcement mechanism and are now punishing employers, shutting down all the people hanging out in front of home depot etc.
The supreme court already ruled that a police officer can request you produce identification if you are suspected of a crime, and being an illegal alien is a crime. They will get proper training to ensure they request this under the right circumstances. I don't see how this is a loss of rights or a loss of freedom for anyone (except illegals).
I am glade a state decided to finally start enforcing this. The law just says that if you are an immigrant you must have your visa on hand. This is common in nearly all south american countries, we are just finally doing here what other countries have already done.

It's pretty much already the law.

The rest of us probably carry a driver's license. At least in Wyoming and Nebraska (the only 2 states I have held a license from) you are required to show documents that establish your citizenship to get a driver's license. And then you are required to carry it at all times when you are operating a motor vehicle. http://www.dmv.ne.gov/examining/pdf/...cationdocs.pdf
Otherwise, you don't HAVE to carry ID as a citizen. Although, even under existing law, with probable cause, if the LE can't determine who you are they can take you in until they figure it out. So, it's usually a good idea to have some id on you or easily available.
Mostly, my opinion of this AZ law is that it seems really redundant. i.e. it is a crime to block traffic - wasn't this already a law? It is illegal to hire illegal immigrants - wasn't this already a law? It's against the law to hide or transport people whom you know are in the country illegally - wasn't this already illegal? If a LE finds that a person turns out to be in the US illegally they turn them over to the INS - Doesn't LE already have this responsibility for any other federal law? (i.e., if they find me in possession of an illegal firearm, if they catch me counterfeiting, if I break into an airport, etc)
Here's a link to the law:
http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf
IMO, the political and activist response to this is way more then is justified by the actual contents of the bill, but maybe I am missing something.

The enforcement mechanisms are already there. This law is stupid. Employers should be able to check if someone has the right to work here but from what I understand, the government run computer system being used to check immigration status works about 1/2 of the time at best. The same thing happened with 911. We knew who the terrorists were, what they were doing and where they were at but our government agencies could not pull it together long enough to do anything about it. In response though, we passed legislation like the anti Patriot Act and promoted body scans at the airport. The laws already exist and do we really need to burden our local jails and police forces even more by passing legislation that will hassle the innocent person far more than the person who is actually breaking the law.

I'm a 100% farm bred US citizen. And I don't care about showing "paper". Don't relate this to nazi germany with the jews, just stop with the over extreme talk. Illegal immigration is a problem within the united states. They take jobs/money/food/ and land. I'm sick of having to PRESS 2 to hear things in english anymore on the phone. You have to provide your license at so much of a tinge of suspicion around you. Do you object to that always? You're in the military, right? How often to you have to provide your military ID even though most know you and your walking around in BDU's? See its easy and I would be more than happy to show everyone in the world my US CITIZENSHIP papers any day if someone asks.

You mean a passport? Birth certificate? You don't have to be a full fledged citizen to get a driver's license. Slightly off-topic: I don't get too worked up about the immigration issue. And I don't mind when I call some place and they give the option to hear instructions in foreign languages. What I do find unacceptable though is the push in some states to put Spanish on traffic signs. If you are going to venture to live and DRIVE in a foreign country, you best learn how to read the traffic signs. When I travel, or if I lived in a foreign country again, I don't expect a damn thing to be presented to me in English.

@GoVegan:
"legislation that will hassle the innocent person far more than the person who is actually breaking the law."
Why would it hassle the innocent person more than the person breaking the law? How often do you and 100 of your white friends all go hang out in front of home depot all day?
This isn't really about passing new laws, it's about the fact that the feds have failed to even attempt to enforcing the immigration laws and therefore Arizona the state is going to take a whack at it.
Anything to solve the problem caused by illegals is okay by me. The irony is that the illegals will all vote out the republicans who signed this law so lol at that but still, this law is not the patriot act or anything even remotely near it.
This is common in most of the world, if you are an immigrant, you have to have some type of visa or something showing you are there legally. We are the only chumps that have not been enforcing this, which is why we have over 10 million illegals here (and I think that's a conservative estimate).
Anyone who wants to fix our financial problem should be behind this bill.

Sadly, I voted yes on this poll. I blame the federal gooberment. How freaking long has this been a damn problem now? I also support it because terrible things like sex trafficing/kidnapping, illegal drugs and illegal firearms are fueled by this illegal alien problem AND Arizona is ground zero for these issues. There is a clear and simple way to become a legal citizen in America. Illegals getting in so easily is also a slap in the face to those who became Americans the right way.

I find it sad that while watching the various news channels covering this, that large groups are coming to "protest" this new effort to enforce federal law. These mobs are simply racist pro-crime extremists. They are also supported by radical leftist socialist and communist and union groups, you can read their signs. And then the black klan spokesman Al Sharpton is getting involved to agitate crime-lovers and cause social disturbances. This man needs to be locked away. These people simply believe in "no borders", and support illegal invaders, and believe brown people do not have to abide by laws of America, and if I was the AZ mayor, with people saying they are going to leave AZ, I'd say great, we don't want AZ to be a crime bastion, and the law abiding citizens will stay, and more tourism would happen, because people would not be afraid of being shot or kidnapped by La Raza supporting Dems working for the cartels.

Look, Arizona had to do something. Arizona has the second highest kidnapping rate IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. With nearly 500,000 illegals living in the state (likely more), to claim they don't have a direct impact on the state is silly.
Now the protestors are smearing the gov's office with refried beans in the shape of swaztika's. (Actually, that's kind of funny)
