Seperation of church and state (Unless it means democrats get more votes)

Pelosi Urges Catholic Church to Play 'Major Role' in Immigration Overhaul

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday urged Catholic leaders to "instruct" their parishioners to support immigration reforms, saying clerics should "play a very major role" in supporting Democratic policies.

"The cardinals, the archbishops, the bishops that come to me and say, 'We want you to pass immigration reform,' and I said, 'I want you to speak about it from the pulpit. I want you to instruct your' -- whatever the communication is," said Pelosi, who is Catholic, speaking at the Nation's Catholic Community conference sponsored by Trinity Washington University and the National Catholic Reporter.

"The people, some (who) oppose immigration reform, are sitting in those pews, and you have to tell them that this is a manifestation of our living the gospels," she said.

While it's not unusual for clergy to speak about politics from the pulpit, it is uncommon for a lawmaker to openly encourage them to preach a specific policy.

Asked for clarification, a Pelosi spokesman issued the statement: "From health care to energy security to immigration reform, the speaker believes the faith community has played and will continue to play a critical role in our national debate."

Pelosi said the church "has an important role to play" in teaching about dignity and respect, and "as a practical matter" it's not possible to tell 12 million illegal immigrants to "go back to wherever you came from or go to jail."

I don't see a problem with asking church leaders to talk to their people. Pelosi wants that because central/south Americans are overwhelmingly Catholic, and fairly hardcore about it. If you want to get those peoples support, going through the church is probably the best way. No different than any other politician/incumbent leader.

Absolutely true LX, they are a big voter bloc. The republicans have held them strong for a long time but the democrats have always had a horse in that race as well. Just wanted to point out that it's not always the religious "right", as both parties have constituents in the religious sector. All to often I hear anything religious being equated to republicans, but the democrats are on that tip too. I would love to see our first Atheist president (though I suspect Obama is likely an atheist and only "christian" for show). I believe in God but I think it would be intiresting to see the difference in actions by an atheist president.

Catholicism is dying out amongst Anglos in the USA, and I /think/ they tend to be Democrat. That's probably why the Democrats haven't been courting them. The Catholics hold some views that aren't generally in sync with the Democratic party, so it wasn't worth alienating their core voters to get their support. With the influx of southern immigrants, they can go for the Catholic support, but keep it away from the core voters since the immigrants tend to be insular. That way they can play both sides, and have it end up as a net positive.

Yea, a politician's a politician. They all do the same things, and play the same games. I don't like either of them :^D I think the best situation we can get is to have an even balance of power between them so nothing gets done. Nothing's better than the crap either side puts out when it gets majority power :^D

Pelosi said today that if you want to pursue more creative jobs like a being a musician to quit your job and do it. You will not have to worry about health insurance.

As a flaky artsy fart painter I hate to say I am down with that. Although the rest of you fulltimers will have to cover the bill for my artsy ass drinking all day with a paintbrush.

          I kinda like her now.
