You really have some good bands listed there and a few I've never heard of. I'll have to look them up on Metal-Archives and Youtube.

I'm more of an 'Old School' metal fan---New Wave of British Heavy Metal and the American bands influenced by them, for the most part)

But I do admit to having a weird and somewhat tentative fascination with the Scandinavian flavors.

OPETH...possibly my favorite metal band of all time. Deliverance would have to be my fav album of their's. Alot of hardcore metal fans are bored by Opeth. That's one of the reasons I like them so much. Love the sudden acoustic/clean vocal/odd sounding arrangements in their music. Very versatile band, very eccentric music. Like Katatonia, Scar Symmetry, Soilwork and some Childrem of Bodom.

There is always a definite undercurrent of sorrow and gloom with the N. European metal. Even if they don't intend on it being there. I think it has something to do with all the rain, snow, and ominous landscape they see day to day. That, and it's just a different influence of culture there altogether. I would really dig being able to afford a trip to Norway, Sweden, or seeing my ancestral land of Germany. I hear there is some very cool viking ship museums around Norway. Oslo I think.

I hear a lot of good things about Opeth. I've tried listening to some of their music, but it's definetly music that requires time as it's like a loaded down dump truck. Takes a while to get going, but once it does get out of the way. If you like Opeth, you should check out an American band called Novembers Doom. Their earlier albums were very good.

                  WOOO! METAL!

I dig everything metal but never got too deep into the Scandinavian metal scene. I have a lot of Soilwork and In Flames but that is as far as I've gotten. This thread should remedy that.

                    Another Opeth Fan

I have almost all their albums. Ghosts of Perdition and Blackwater Park are my favorites. Even their ballad ablum "Damnation" is good (all clean vocals). I like other Nordic metal bands, but none compares to Opeth.

Nonserviam, you should give Opeth another chance i think. When i bought my first from them (blackwater park) it took me a while to get into it, but once i did, there was no looking back. It really is some amazing music. IMO some of the best musicianship out there today.

Monkey, Soilwork and In Flames are good starting points, that's where i started along with Opeth. There is some really good Scandinavian metal out there, great musicians. You should really check out Arcturus's album The Sham Mirrors. Amazing album; one of their more accessible.

Grampy, sorry i missed you, welcome to SnusOn! Opeth is hands down my favorite band of all time. Their album Damnation was actually meant to be released with Deliverance as a double album showcasing their contrast of brutal metal and beautiful acoustic numbers if you didn't already know that. I was able to go to a concert of theirs a couple years ago in Omaha, best concert i've ever been too, Tool is a close second. Both put on amazing live shows. If you get the chance, go to one of their shows.

Edit: Grampy, i see you have been here since 2008, longer than i lol.

Opeth are really good. Fun band to listen to. Talented fellas.

This thread is inspiring. Never been exposed to much Scando metal but I am a metal junky of the more mainstream variety. Tool, Pelican are favorites, as are the oldschool standbys like Metallica and Pantera. I tend to lean toward the punk rock side of things, but metal has a special place in my heart, to be sure.

big fan of metal all around but if i just narrow it down to stuff from the great white European north it includes

                            Emperor
                            Dissection
                            TYR
                            Finntroll
                            Lumsk
                            Amon Amarth
                            Gorgoroth
                            Immortal
                            Mayhem
                            Silencer
                            Darkthrone
                            Dark funeral
                            Norther
                            Ensiferum
                            Enslaved
                            satyricon
and i could literally go on for over a day listing off bands

i tend to gravitate more towards folk metal or things with a folk like theme to it.

some of my first metal bands were old mans child, gorgoroth and dissection so my metalhead roots are firmly tied to the north. so much i'm actually getting a tattoo as a homage to Jon from dissection

I must say though, I really am not liking the new Darkthrone, though I liked the 2 before it pretty well, but The Cult is Alive was great. The unholy trinity is still their best work.
