    Scandinavian Metal?

I know everyone here is a fan of Scandinavian tobacco, but is anyone here a fan of Scandinavian metal? I've only found a few metalheads on this site so far, and they haven't visited the site in quite a while.

I listen to a lot of Black Metal (Immortal, Gorgoroth, Drudkh,) Blackened Death (Behemoth, Belphegor), Gothic Doom (Draconian, Swallow the Sun, Theatre of Tragedy), Atmospheric (Wardruna, Elysian Blaze, Walknut) etc... It's really too many to list. But my tastes are still pretty eclectic, I also like Judas Priest, Terry Reid, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd.... \m/

EDIT: Though not from Northern Europe, I must give acknowledgment to Rotting Christ from Greece. A band that has been consistent and stood the test of time for 20 years. Hence my screenname "NonServiam".

Oh, I am a BIG fan of Scandinavian metal, and have been since the early 80's.

I love Immortal, Unleashed, Darkthrone(older more), Bathory, Celtic Frost(and Triptykon), Carpathian Forest, Satyricon, Emperor(older more), Candlemass(Messiah era), and many many more. I also like The 69 Eyes, and The Sounds.

As a fan of this music, I think it has all played with influencing my own music.

Yes! I totally forgot to throw Satyricon and Carpathian Forest in that list. I listen to so many that to post them all and what "genre" they're in would be overwhelming. I try not to classify them anymore. It's all just metal.

Has anyone been fortunate enough to attend any of the metal festivals in Europe? Like Wacken, etc... I would love to go if I was single and had the cash!

I'd love to see a European festival, but I never have. I have seen a few bands in the states, Immortal, Dark Funeral..... Dissection, Unleashed.... no, maybe not Unleashed, I can't recall them all.

I've been to a lot of concerts here in Oklahoma. From Tool, to Ministry, even Marilyn Manson when I was a teenager back in 1996. The European acts don't come here as often. They usually skip us and instead hit the coasts and usually Texas. Although I did see the Invaluable Darkness tour at the Cain's Ballroom in Tulsa with Behemoth and Dimmu Borgir. Very cool show! You were very lucky to see Dissection. Somberlain and Light's Bane are just classics \m/

I didn't get too much exposure to the first wave of black metal. I've been tempted to buy a Bathory album, I just haven't decided which yet. I really like the song One Rode to ASA Bay. Although, I admit the first time I heard the song was when it was covered by Opera IX, who actually did a really good job with it.

I love early Bathory, Under The Sign of the Black Mark is excellent, and when my band does some shows, we are gonna do "13 Candles". My fave Bathory though, is Blood Fire Death, as well, as I really love Hammerheart too, and it was a great loss for metal when Quorthon died, but he did leave on a high note as Nordland I, and II, I think, are great.

If you don't mind me asking...what role do you have in the band, vocals, guitar, bass, etc... I've played guitar since I was about 18. Never was lucky enough to get a band started or to experience the rewards of creating music with others. Right now I play a Schecter Hellraiser w/ EMG pick-ups, though there is times I would love to have Duncans instead. I'm very happy with the Schecter, great quality, but if I had the cash I would like to have a Jackson Soloist or a Paul Reed Smith.

I'll have to check them out! I really like some of the folk/pagan metal. The only bands I've liked so far are Drudkh, Walknut, Opera IX's Anphisbena, and Wardruna which is more atmospheric Norse tribal music.

NonServ- For ASTRUM, I write all the music, 3/4ths of the lyrics, did all vocals, played all guitar on over half the last CD, played all the bass. On Kosmokrater, I do it all.
