“I’m a big fan, he’s a great guy. So lay off him, he’s doing great,” the British songsmith said on Tuesday, ABC News reported.
This year’s recipient of the Library of Congress’s Gershwin Prize for Popular song, McCartney is set to perform at the White House Wednesday evening and be feted by fellow musicians Stevie Wonder, Faith Hill, the Jonas Brothers, Elvis Costello and Herbie Hancock, among others.
Speaking at a press conference in Washington ahead of the event, McCartney, 67, said he planned to “try to have fun” but predicted a case of the nerves when performing “like, three feet away” from Obama.

U.N. investigator calls for halt to CIA drone killings [a "Playstation" mentality....

GENEVA (Reuters) - A United Nations investigator called Wednesday for a halt to CIA-directed drone strikes on suspected Islamic militants, warning that killings ordered far from the battlefield could lead to a "Playstation" mentality.
Philip Alston, U.N. special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, said missile strikes could be justified only when it was impossible to capture insurgents alive instead and only if they were carried out by regular U.S. armed forces operating with proper oversight and respect for the rules of war.
The Central Intelligence Agency's use of unmanned Predator or Reaper drones in Afghanistan and Pakistan against al Qaeda and Taliban suspects had led to the death of "many hundreds," including innocent civilians, he said in a 29-page report.
"Intelligence agencies, which by definition are determined to remain unaccountable except to their own paymasters, have no place in running programs that kill people in other countries," Alston said.

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- Officials say one inmate was killed and five others were hurt by lightning that struck at a prison in eastern Ohio.
Authorities at the Belmont Correctional Institution say lightning hit just before 6:30 p.m. Monday as inmates were in a recreation yard.
Thirty-three-year-old Dalin Anderson of northeast Ohio's Summit County and another inmate were taken to a hospital, where Anderson was pronounced dead. Prison spokeswoman Kathy Cole said the other inmate was still hospitalized Tuesday with injuries that are not life threatening.
Four other inmates who were hurt were treated at the prison.
Records show Anderson was at the prison since 2005 on charges of drug possession and illegal possession of chemicals. He was expected to be released in 2014.

Gary Coleman's wife may not have had authority to 'pull plug'
New York Daily News ^ | Wednesday, June 2nd 201 | KRISTIE CAVANAGH

Four days after Gary Coleman's wife, Shannon Price, opted to remove the actor from life support, a report has surfaced suggesting she didn't have the right to make that call.
"Some people have raised the issue that they saw Gary and Shannon on 'Divorce Court,'" Coleman's attorney, Randy Kester, told UsMagazine.com, "and now there's some questions about whether or not they were married at the time of the death and whether [Shannon] had the authority to pull the plug at the hospital."
The couple, who quietly wed in 2007, appeared on the Fox court show in 2008. In February, Coleman pleaded guilty to misdemeanor mischief following an April 2009 domestic dispute with Price.
"Some people in the public are raising issues whether she had authority to do that and if she has authority to be making funeral arrangements, and exactly where she fits into his estate," Kester added. "I think there's going to be some developing controversy about some issues of authority."
Documents clarifying Price's authority have yet to be found.
"Everyone is out there searching for a will," said Kester, "and I haven't seen one yet."
Coleman, the troubled child star best known for his role on the hit sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes," died last Friday from a brain hemorrhage caused by an accident at his Utah home. He was 42.
Price, 24, has not responded directly to the controversy. She wrote in a statement that she was "very grateful for all the wonderful support [from fans]... This is so comforting to the family to know how beloved he still is."
According to Us, the actor's funeral will be held Friday or Saturday in the Salt Lake City area.

Government Employee Fired for Participating in “Tea Party” Rallies
A Semi-News/Semi-Satire from AzConservative ^ | 1 June 2010 | John Semmens
Posted on Wednesday, June 02, 2010 3:01:39 PM
KrisAnne Hall, an assistant state attorney for the Live Oak-based Third Judicial Circuit, was fired from her job for daring to speak out against government excesses during so-called “Tea Party” rallies held in Suwannee County, Florida.
State Attorney Skip Jarvis explained, “a person can’t serve two masters. These Tea Party people are against those of us who are in the government. I gave Ms. Hall the chance to choose which side she was on. She chose unwisely. I had to terminate her employment.”
Jarvis rejected Hall’s argument that her participation in Tea Party activities was the exercise of “protected free speech” on her own time. “It’s not an issue of so-called ‘free speech’ or even ‘free time,’ for that matter,” Jarvis contended. “She was agreeing with and supporting people who are expressing a desire for less government and smaller budgets. No government employee has the right to say such things even on their own time.”
Jarvis also hastened to add that “this firing won’t result in any budgetary savings. I won’t give these enemies of the state the slightest satisfaction. Ms. Hall’s position will be filled by someone who understands where his loyalties must lie if he expects to be on the public payroll.
