J1 indicates that it is a 1964 Gillette Ball-End Tech.

If it looks like the second one, it is a Gillette "Old Style", made from 1903-1921. More than likely it is a Ball-End Tech though, as you didn't mention a serial number, which the "Old Style" ones had under the head, and would be a 7 digit number like this >>C118414

Thanks bro, whatever it is..it gives a good shave. Need to get some better blades now and a good shave soap and brush.
Any suggestions? I have a medium to course beard

No, it isn't red. I've spent the last couple minutes looking around the web for the razor. Mine has a black handle, with a silver twisty knob at the bottom.

Bummer. Still a GREAT shaving SuperSpeed though, I have a '67(M2) just like it. I asked if it was red, because that is one of the years they made red and blue tipped SuperSpeeds, and they are sought-after the most. (red=agressive, blue=super non-agressive, silver= in between)

You guys have got interested in trying this razor out, but I can't remember the last time I used anything but my straight. I may give it a go 2 shaves from now. My fur's grown too long for a DE, so I'll have to use my straight, then try the DE on the subsequent shave.

lX, Sorry, the black handle changes things. An A4 with a black handle is a 1980 Black-Handled Flare-Tip SuperSpeed.

They used some number designations more than once. The designation "A" was used in both 1955, and 1980. But the black handled ones were only made from 1966-1986. Sorry for the confusion.

As far as a brush, just go to CVS Pharmacy, Walgreens, or Rite-Aid and pick up a Van Der Hagens Deluxe Brush. Seriously, for a 5 dollar brush it is one of my favorites now that its broken in, you can actually see it in the photo I posted above.

As for soap, the VDH soap you can find at the places I mentioned, is a damn fine soap for the price. Way underpriced, even. I use it all the time.

If you wanna spend a little more, I just got some "Bay and Clove" from The Well Honed Razor.

The stuff is rediculous! Slicker than snot, great scent of clove, and gives a great tingly sensation.

I have that problem alot....

Definately give it a try - doesnt come close to a straight, but those superspeeds give a damn fine shave!

Update on my DE shaving experience; I LOVE IT,and so does my wife...lol. GoVegan sent me a variety of blades to try out and see which I liked the best. I'm almost certain that I prefer the Astra, and the Derby blades. Still haven't gone through all of them yet. The issue I'm having is I can't seem to find a soap that I like better than what I currently use. I've tried all the soaps from the local stores, and I'm going to start looking on the net for a good soap. Anyone have a recommendation of brands or places to look for the soap? Also a good place to buy blades would be great. I'm asking you guys first, because I trust that if you buy from a shop, then that means they're reputable.
