Any Help would be very much appreciated!!! I have a Gillette Safety Razor, I think I have seen terminology that makes me think mine is of the butterfly variety and it has nine numbers on it with dots in between. I know nothing about this subject so here are my questions.
How can you tell what the numbers are for?
How do you tell it's age? How do you clean or sanitize it? Will it cut my face to ribbons? Is it better than the 3 piece one I saw at the antique store?
Thanks for your answers in advance, I don't have a clue but I am interested in at least trying what so many people on here have said improves their shaving pleasure.

1. You will be able to tell the approximate age by the serial number most of the time.
2. For cleaning - I take mine to a jewelry store and have them use a sonic cleaner and hot air but rubbing alcohol and hot water should be fine.
3. It will not cut your face to ribbons if you go slow and pay attention.
4. I prefer 3 piece razors because they are very sturdy and I don't need to worry about doors aligning but its really a matter of preference.
Found on bottom F 4
Thanks for the reply! I don't see anything that looks like a serial number. I just says inside where the blade goes Pat nos on pkg. I don't have package. Under the bottom it says Made in USA Gillette in a diamond and Reg US Pat OFF I don't really care how old it is anyway just that it shaves good. On Ebay the refer to them as Fatboys I think.
I have soaked it in alcohol a couple days and brushed vigourously with tooth brush but still see what looks like soap residue. Maybe that is as clean as it gets.
The numbers on this razor i believe are related to adjustments.

Post a pic of it here if you can. If I can't figure it out I bet Owens can. Better yet go to the shaving forum at http://badgerandblade.com/vb/ and post a pic there. If you post the pic at Badger and Blade you will probably get all kinds of information about your razor. You should be fine if you soaked it in alcohol for a few days. If you don't have any blades yet, PM me with your address and I will send you a few to try but it will probably be later next week before I can send them out. The blade will be what really makes a difference and there are just too many variables to recommend any blade in particular. I do like Derby's the best for my skin and my razor but that is just me.
Hey Rattlesnake, welcome to the site. A perfect example of how blades can make or break your shave....tonight I swapped out a Feather blade, and threw in a 7 am blade. I'd read that the 7am's were a pretty good blade, so I had one and wanted to try it. Oh dear god, I hate that blade so much...so much so, that mid shave I swapped blades to a Derby (which I know I love and almost always get a great shave from) just so I could salvage the shave.
On a better note, tonight I tried my Col Conk's Amber shave soap. It's glycerin based, and the fragrance is nice but not as nice as the Conk's Bayrum. It lathers like crazy though, really nice thick lather that lasts. So that was the good part of the shave tonight, lol
If what you have is a vintage Gillette with a rotating adjustable dial numbered 1-9: -
If it is kind of "fat" and heavy, its a Gillette Fatboy
If it is kind of "skinny" and light, its a Gillette Slim
Both are two of the greatest razors ever created. If you have a Fatboy, congratulations - you have one of the most sought-after razors of all time! Out of all my razors, my Fatboy is my daily go-to head-shaving razor. Loaded with a Derby, the thing just glides over the skin as the hair just falls off effortlessly. Baby's-ass smooth every time, no nicks, no irritation, no weepers.

Thanks everyone,
Owens187 thanks for the picture. Mine has the black ring under the numbers for adjusting how much meat comes off. F 4 under the head so I think it is a 1935 134/160 TTO or a 1960 TTO/Tech according to the link GoVegan sent in above. I don't really think it is the 1960.
I used it this morning without to much bloodletting using a CVS blade thats probably the reason for the few nicks I got. I only made one pass left a few rough spots til my face gets accustomed to DE shaving. I looked at a bunch of videos this past week and I have a lot to learn and need to get some quality cream/soap/brush/preshave stuff and for sure some good blades, and grow a little patience with myself. But if I keep coming back here there isn't any telling what Ya'll might teach me. I got a good razor, some Beau Brummel razor blades, a nose full of snuff and a lip full of snus, can't ask for much better. BTW I ain't gonna use them blades though, they might not be sharp.
Thanks
Edwin
