Just wanted to post something for you tonight. I finished my shave a few minutes ago, and I've got some serious burn in a couple places. I threw a Feather blade into my SS. I don't use the SS everyday, and normally when I do, I use a Derby blade (very comfortable blades). Just goes to show ya, that everyone gets razor burn from time to time. Anytime you do something new in your routine, it can cause issues. Or if you're blade angle is off it will chew you up, pretty sure that was my problem tonight becuase I don't use the SS everyday.

Just keep trying, and watch Mantic59's videos on YouTube, they were very helpful to me in the beginning.

I never had this problem until now... I'm 26 now... and shaving for about 8 years already...
Will watch the videos..... we have to find out what's causing this stress.. ;-)

Just a quick story about something that happened tonight. I took a shower tonight, and afterward as I stood in a towel and went through my shave prep I noticed my 7 yr old son was standing in the bathroom watching me. He stood there with wild amazement, because he's seen me shave with cartridges before, but never with a DE. Not surprisingly he asked me several questions and I explained every step along the way until I was finished.

I then told him that one day, when he's older I'd show him how to shave with one of these. Hearing this, he sensed an opening and asked me if I could show him how to make lather, etc. Of course I was very happy about this and agreed to show him.

So I took him into the kitchen and pulled a bar stool over to the sink. Plopped him up into the stool. I made a huge deal out of this too, making him feel as if in a barber shop. We used a towel as a cape/apron...snapping it before placing it around his neck. Warming a towl and placing it on his little face, to soften his "beard" of course. After pulling the towel off his face, I walk him through loading the brush, and let him do it. Then letting him take a shot or two at whipping up some lather, and me finishing the job. We used Col Conks Amber, because that's the one he picked as his favorite smelling.

The lather ready, I sat him back in the barstool and began applying the warm lather to his already BBS face. He kept giggling about how it tickled, it was hilarious. He kept yelling for Mom to come in and see his face, and the funny part about this was that everytime he opened his mouth, he'd eat some lather..lol. We got him sorted out though.

Having already removed the blade from my Gillette ball tech, I took to scraping the lather from his face, on the WTG pass. Relathered his little face for an ATG pass, and explaining to him along the that we do this to make our face BBS. When we finished I took a warm cloth and wiped the remaining lather from his face, and then applied some cool water to his face. I took a few dabs of my cologne and put a few drops on his neck.

The next few hours he ran around the house having everyone rub his face to feel how smooth. It was great to share this with him, and hopefully we'll do this again. I was a bit worried about pretending to shave him, because I don't want him going into the bathroom and picking up my razor and trying to do this himself. So I had a long talk with him about how these blades can really, really hurt him. He is sufficiently frightened now, to never touch them.

              Cool Rick ;-)

Hopefully your son won't have any issue shaving later ;-)

Just wanted to say that I've used my Mach3 again last evening after a one hour hot bath and didn't get the burning sensation anymore .....
I think there's something to do with the movement of the blade in the end.... I used to shave quite aggressively lately .....
Another reason might be my sinusitis, there is a correlation between sinusitis and shaving .... since I've dug deeper and found out that a lot of people have this issue with sinusitis ;-)

                Cool story RC.

                Really nice.

I got c*** blocked on the sweaters. The wife eBayed them and told me she would 'take care of it' so just listing razors.

If anyone has a question PM me.

Regardless, I have totally found DE nirvana with three razors. An Aristocrat, my custom handle with open comb head, and a Schick injector. I'll never buy another razor again!!!!

The injectors shave well because the blades are very rigid. They don't bite as frequently as DE since there is little play in the blade angle. They last twice as long as a DE, but the blades are pretty pricey and hard to come by.

Funny how King Gillette started the disposable culture aspect of our society, yet his original products have endured for 100 years...

I am so happy to be freed from the cartridge game!!

Plus, swear to god, when I shave with a snus in I get BBS every time. Snus really helps to draw your lip tight for a keen cut and clean shave!!

Some time ago, I found my grandfather's DE razor (64 Ball Tech Gillette), and a Genco Fluid Steel Straight razor. I've been shaving ever since with the DE, and loving it. I was going to send the straight to Owens to restore because I didn't really have the time. My father and I have made TONS of knives over the years, and primarily it's his hobby but I used to pitch in just to spend time. So I have the "skills" (I use this term very loosely, lol)and access to the proper equipment to do the restoration of this straight razor myself. So today I went over there and worked on the blade for a bit, just threw it on the polishing wheels for a quick clean-up. Still need to break out the Dremmel tool to finish it up. You can still see residue from the polishing compound inside the scales.

I watched a few videos of how to hone a straight, and my dad already has stones that I can use....ranging from 1200-6000 so after I finish cleaning it up, I'll fix the edge and hone it properly. The one thing I'll have to get is a proper strop. Here are a few pics of before and after....

Anyone know what these scales are made of????

It would be difficult to shave your chin with the DE...

I guess it takes one year practice and some cuts to get it straight

Shaving with a DE is easy, compared to using this straight razor, lol. Honestly, I'm not man enough yet, but soon will be I'm going to hone it, or try to. I've been watching the vids on how to accomplish this, so we'll see.

Okay, I've honed it, but need to strop it. My question is, can I just use an old leather belt to strop it? I don't want to buy a new/used strop until after Christmas.

I am surprised Owens hasn't answered that yet Rick. I have never tried a straight before. That is a pretty razor. On the blade is it stamped $3.00 or something else?

IMO a DE razor is actually easier to shave with than a disposable multi blade. You just have to be patient with it. I used a disposable this morning because we stayed at my mom's last night and it must have taken my 5 passes just to get a clean shave. I almost felt like I was using a toy.

All a strop is, is an extra wide leather belt. That'll work fine; just be careful not to put too much pressure on the edges. You can crack the steel.
