    Recycling

Ok. I've been recycling household trash for the last 2 weeks. i'm a novice.
Are foil/paper envelopes you might find hot chocolate or certain powdered
breakfast drinks packaged in recyclable? How about potato chip bags?

It depends on where you live but as a rule, plastics coded 5 or less are recyclable. Your foil envelopes and potato chip bags are usually not recyclable.

Neither of those are, unless you have some kind of special program down there. In MD, no coated paper can be recycled, and my area doesn't take aluminum foil either.

In California, only beverage containers can be recycled in the little recycling huts near grocery stores.

Yah but everyone has like 3 bins up in northern CA and every mall has like 6 bins for every different kind of material. I used to make a fortune recycling all my used beer cans though, lol. Trash bags full.

You guy's are way behind the times! We have one can here for recycling and ANYTHING recyclable goes into it. Paper, plastic, jars, whatever... The bonus is that the can comes free with garbage service and it's a huge can. You can downsize to a tiny garbage can for trash and save a lot of money if you recycle as they charge based on the size of your regular waste can. They will even leave you a container, upon request, to put any used motor oil in and come pick it up for free.

Same here they merged everything to one garbage sized can for recycling about 4-5 years ago.

These days when in doubt, put it in the recycling bin. They have efficient means of sorting all that shit, and it's their job. Up here even food items, with the exception of meat, and pizza boxes or paper materials with food all over them can be put in with yard waste. Same for you guys? Beware of food recycling in the Summer though, unless you want to see what a billion fruit flies in one place looks like

If you buy sun chips now a days their bags are 100% bio degradable. Shit you not they feel wierd and are really loud to crumple but if you leave them out in the yard or compost heap they'll break up and stuff. Wonder what they're made of.

Yeah, I looked inside the BIG recycle bin to see what the others have put in there. It seems that anything goes.

                      Thanks for all the replies.

Here they have different bins for everything from food to cardboard to plastic etc etc but they also, oddly enough, have the "put anything recyclable in here" bin. I of course only use that bin.
