Department of Education officials are investigating after students at a Bronx school claimed they were forced to clean toilets as a punishment. Some students at In-Tech Academy in Kingsbridge say they were assigned janitorial duties as part of their detention as recently as last week.
"After school the principal came in with the inspector lady and she was like 'Oh, everyone has to pitch in and clean the toilets and stuff.' So we was cleaning them and we had to clean around them and nasty, it was just mad nasty," said one student.
"Like that's not cool, like making kids clean toilets like that's not how that should go," said another student.
The DOE says if the allegations are true, appropriate action will be taken.

Please tell me what it wrong with this? (other than "we was cleaning them")
Seems to me that this is a punishment that actually would work...the students are disgusted. And, what appropriate action will be taken??? I mean, really? I can see it already...principal suspended pending investigation. blah blah blah. And don't give me that crap (no pun intended) about kids getting sick. People have been cleaning toilets for about 100 years and if you do it properly you won't get sick.

It's a good punishment, as you can't spank them anymore, the parent(s) don't care, and suspension is a holiday for them.

have them clean up their own crap? good lord...our children can't do that!

what a novel idea. get them ready for the real world.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

No kidding. I have to clean the toilet my carpenters use...and they're friggin' animals. Beats payin' for it though.

First of all, everyone at this school should be fired for failing to teach their students basic english. Second, what is wrong with cleaning the toilets, is a young man "above" that nowadays? How else will they be cleaned? I see nothing wrong with this punishment. I'm sure the ACLU will come in and say that they have a right to not clean toilets and somehow claim the constitution backs up that assertion.

When I was fifteen, I worked for a chain grocery store and cleaned actual sh*t out of urinals. Yep, some people think its funny to go #2 in urinals. If a fifteen year old can handle cleaning up something like that, I'm sure these kids are perfectly capable of cleaning toilets.

LOL, When I was in junior high school I was a janitor in an elementary school - the school district hired us to clean up at the end of the day.

It only paid minimum wage when I started, but by 9th grade I was making a couple bucks over minimum wage.

The official janitor supervised us and did any of the parts that the district considered dangerous (i.e. running the floor buffer, chemically stripping the floors, etc).

It was a really great job. 2 hours a day and the school was 2/3 way between my house and my junior high the YMCA was 1/3 closer to my house. So I'd get a ride to school, then walk from school to work (about 1 mile) and then walk to the YMCA to work out (another mile) then walk home (another mile). It was an awesome deal and I was home by 7 or so every night. Plus I had my own cash to spend at 13 years old, membership in the Teacher's Credit Union, etc.

I'm having a hard time considering this abuse... Do they all have maids at home? I make my kids clean the bathroom, and the living room, and the kitchen, and their rooms (the grossest of all), etc.

I suspect these "kids" do not have to do anything, ever.

Clearly this is torture. If making people stay up past their bedtimes or sit ina rom with strobe lights like a club is torture, than cleaning toilets must absolutely constitute torture and therefore is an abuse of human rights.

They'll sue, claiming the school violated their civil rights, and there will be marches.
