California drivers may soon come bumper to bumper with the latest product of the digital age: ad-blaring license plates.
State lawmakers are considering a bill allowing the state to begin researching the use of electronic license plates for vehicles.
The device would mimic a standard license plate when the vehicle is moving but would switch to digital messages when it is stopped for more than four seconds in traffic or at a red light.
In emergencies, the plates could be used to broadcast Amber Alerts or traffic information.

The author of SB1453 says California would be the first state to implement such technology if it decides to adopt the plates on a large scale.
Supporters say license-plate advertising could generate much-needed revenue in a state facing a $19 billion deficit.

        Well, hell's bells ...

let's ban the real distractions -- ya know, like the ones that don't produce revenues...

At least with these, who knows how many revenue streams they might get out of just one 'minor' incident...

Let's make sure to toss in Amber Alerts & traffic information just to prove we are civic-minded...

And I'll bet they charge extra for the plates!!!

INORITE? Next thing you know, they'll have one that lights up when Nancy Pelosi is on her period. Then again that wouldn't work cause it would never go dim.

From the leaders who brought us a Greece-like economy comes the newest line of stupid ideas. The irony is that they will charge me double to buy these (mandatory) new plates, then they will advertise on my property, against my will, free of charge, and I will not make any money from it (and registration fees will go up, again...).

This is like the government forcing me to advertise for Coca Cola by painting an add on the side of my house that faces the street, at my expense of course.

Next up they will add little chips (also at my expense) to the license plates to track my speed by sattelite and mail me a ticket each time I go over the limit. (tickets will be doubled to cover the cost of the chips , of course)

What gives them the right to force me to pay them just so they can make money by advertising for someone elses company on MY property, against my will, and at my expense? Theres no way this could happen. But I am sure they will spend 20 million$ researching it as a possibility.

I don't know, it sounds kind of fun.

This is the CA govt we are talking about. These will be hackable and they will be hacked. I can think of a lot of mischief to get into with these.

That's what I thought at first too, but they would just make the fine for having a hacked signs like 10k and be done with it.

The real fun comes in when I start a non-profit org that collects donations from republicans. I will then use this money to buy add space on every vehicle in santa cruz and san francisco, so all the cars that have the little "Obama/Biden" stickers will now have a giant "IMPEACH OBAMA" add in high def blaring from their license plate. This will cause the liberals to release the kraken (ACLU) and get this whole thing repealed somehow.

I think it would be cool for a little bit but the distractions may cause me to have an accident. Be pretty cool though looking at it in the driveway watching some ads and stuff but would prolly wear out after a month or so.

                              can anyone say......seisures?
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.
