Those charts are nice and flashy. I bet they would be even more dramatic if they were correlated to population and percentage of smokers.

Whenever you throw China into a graph and don't put the numbers in perspective it blows the whole thing.

I saw an economist try and rationalize China's carbon output and pollution statistics by basing them on per person math. It dramatically diminished the actual impact of the figures when compared to countries with less population.

The basic idea is captured pretty well though. Figures can be twisted and charts can be made to say whatever you wish. At the end of the day all I know for certain is my rectum is swollen. Any way you slice it, it takes extraordinary uncommon sense to rationalize sin taxes. It also takes a smidgen of sensationalism and misplaced greed.

I think they made it really clear: "Number of cigarettes smoked annually". I mean china has more people so they are going to smoke more annually, right? What additional perspective are you looking for in a graph that compares "Numbers of cigarettes smoked annually"?

that might level the perspective.

like average tax per smoker might look way more dramatic than tax per pack. How many people living on the boarder of high tax states drive to other states to buy cigarettes to avoid taxes? A butt load I bet.

It's a self fulfilling prophecy. When no one can afford to smoke any more what will they tax next to make up for the lost revenue. It makes my pucker factor twitch just thinking about it. It will not stop at salt and sugar.

Lol, thats probably what they want. Someday sin taxes will be everywhere. Those who want to create a utopian society will continue pushing them down our collective throughts untill one day our country looks like that movie "Demolition Man", where if your curse or say a bad word, some faceless robot will print you out a ticket and fine you.

Why don't we tax the sh*t outta golf equipment. Those pompous politicians would love that. A golf ball is only approximately one inch in diameter, yet the average golf course consumes like an entire square mile! I know my idea doesn't hold water, I'm just venting! Damn Taxes
