Do what "TheJanitor" said. If you start ti up in safe mode it will only load the essentials and you should be able to move around better to try and fix it.

If that doesn't work, and you are unable to connect to the internet to download cleaners, you will be forced to take it to somewhere like bestbuy and pay them to fix it.

    Sorry bud.

          Before you do anything crazy,

          ipconfig /flushdns

Most malware programs simply hijack your DNS and doing that can get you past the issue, at least temporarily and get some anti-virus programs installed.

I would also go to the Microsoft website from your work and download the starter program for their antivirus program. Save that file to a thumb drive and then use that thumb drive to install it on your computer. Once it starts and all it will have to do on your computer is do a behind the scenes download of the rest of the files. Microsoft's antivirus program is actually really good and on par with any of the other free ones.

Hope it all works out and gets fixed!

There was some good suggestions... but... if you are using IE8 perhaps you should go in and restore all of the default settings.

I'm using XP. Thanks for all the suggestion, please no more for now. I may just take today off, and relax, and mess with it tomorrow. I was up till 2am last night running the various anti-spyware and virus stuff, which did catch some new stuff, but it still wouldn't let me connect. Anyway, tomorrow is Friday, and I want to feel somewhat refreshed before tackling this.

IceBleu- THANK YOU. This is what happened exactly!

I wasn't gonna mess with the comp today originally, but while the wife was cooking dinner, I thought I'd try one of the easiest less invasive recommendations, it was either your suggestion or the ipconfig I was gonna try first, so I just decided to try your suggestion first, and well, it worked, right away.

Thank you all for your suggestions, esp IceBleu for posting what it was I happened to have had wrong, and it was an anti-virus virus, damn things.

I have noticed with my computer issues I have had, it's always been a super simple easy thing, IF, you can figure out what it is.

Now I can view porn now.

And I will turn on the recovery thing.

Anti-Virus suite did that to me once, it blocks net access and instructs you to pay for their 'service' to get rid of their own block. AGGHHH!!

Try this- open internet explorer / at the top menu bar, click on 'tools' / click 'internet options' / click the tab for 'connections' / at the bottom, click the button for 'LAN settings' / make sure the box for 'use proxy server' is NOT checked. If there is a check mark in that box, click to remove, click 'OK', and then try your net again.

That #$%^&* Anti-Virus Virus software somehow loaded itself and changed that setting to 'use proxy server' on my laptop, so I couldn't access any web page at all. It took me two days on the desktop computer surfing tech sites to figure it out. Real anti-virus software wouldn't fix it because once it's changed, it's not really a virus, just a system setting. Hope this helps.

Glad you got it worked out Tom. If you're using IE, you may want to switch to a different browser on XP. Also, make sure all your applications are up to date. Adobe Acrobat is a big security risk, as is Java. A lot of infections come through secondary sources.

Yeah, surfing porn with windows and IE is a problem. At least disable java and javascript IMO. I would switch to Firefox as well. Disabling the scripting will break sites, but there's plenty of stuff that will work. Good Luck!

I'm really not tech savy, and for the long most part of it, I've not had any/many problems. I did try a few different browsers for a while, Opera and Google Chrome, but really, I didn't care for them, and just went back to IE. I kinda like to leave well enough alone, and confront issues as they happen, if they happen. Thanks.

                            Glad you got things sorted.

Glad to help out. As far as different browsers, I use firefox and redundant anti-virus security, and that mess still managed to piggy back on a legit software download right past all my security. I turned the laptop off one night, and when I powered up the next day, no more internet. I fixed the setting in internet explorer because I couldn't get firefox to load far enough to even get to the tools menu (another part of the anti-virus virus, I guess). As soon as I corrected it, ie and firefox both ran fine.

Anyway, at least now you can get back to your porn. It's good to have priorities in life.

I love Firefox. Since I'm cursed with dial-up in BFE, the ad and flash blocker add-ons really seem to speed up my downloads. Nothing worse than waiting for porn. Sorry, but I've been sitting at a 199 count of posts and was ready to turn the century mark. Woo-Hoo 200!
