I knew I liked you for a reason!!!

I went to Berkeley, was on the 9 year plan here, plus stayed in the area for a few years after I finished, so lived there about 12 years I guess. Sadly, after the earthquake, I really didn't go back except for one time. Just too hard to see all the damage.

Next trip out west, I will make a point of gong down for the day.

I was supposed to drive to downtown Oakland that afternoon to see the World Series on the giant screen they set up. About 15 minutes before I was to lave, my buddy called me to say he couldn't leave campus on time. I said i was still gonna go to downtown. As I was leaving, I said fu** it, and just drove up to Berkeley. The quake hit just as I was getting out of my car. Didn't really realize what was up until a plate glass window broke right n front of me.

Went to the bar, ordered a pitcher and sat waiting for the game. Was frustrated that the TV was out, almost got up to leave when the TV's finally came back on. Pictures of the broken Bay Bridge. I sat, along with the rest of the bar, in just a silent dumb gaze. We just couldn't believe what we were seeing. Then started hearing reports how big the quake was.

Then some pictures of the Cyprus freeway. But it was a long time, maybe 30 minutes before anyone realized that was a double decker freeway.

It was then that my knees almost buckled underneath me. See, if I had driven to downtown Oakland, I would been right on the upper deck in my little 66 Volkswagen Beetle. Just chance that I changed my mind at the very last second.

I eventually made my way to some friend's house, and we spent the night watching the fires in the Marina district.

I always said it was the quake that brought my ex and I together. We met two weeks later at a Halloween party. Filled with kids from Santa Cruz who only that day were finally able to get out. The roads had been closed until then. They were a bit wild and Laura and I took solace in talking with each other. Found out she was living with the sister of an ex housemate, and had even been to the one house dinner i missed the week before. But she had seen my room, my housemates took her down to see all the earthquake damage.

My best friend met his wife two days after I met Laura. At his wedding (I was best man as he had been at mine) I said in my little speech it was the earthquake that made us both reach out and finally hold on to someone.

I made it down to Santa Cruz about 3 months later and juts sobbed when saw downtown. Just more than I could take and I didn't go back. Understand it's all fixed up now and beautiful again, I really should go back when have the opportunity.

These are two fairly recent pictures, though my hair has since returned to a manageable length (thank goodness).

This first one was taken at Jandek's first show in Houston, Texas on April 5th of 2009. I was lucky enough to get my picture with him. Despite being one of the most mysterious figures in modern music, he was very friendly.

This second one was taken sometime in May. I am drinking a screwdriver. The combination of the vodka and the bowl I had just smoked resulted in an uncharacteristic non-forced smile.
