I am also part of a credit union and they are great for saving accounts, car loans, equity loans and sometimes also personal loans.
The one we belong to is pretty much the main saving account for a small community. You will get better interest rates, especially for your kids.

They are thinking about going to a checking service but I really like the overdraft protection at USBANK which I dont think they will cover. If USBANK close's that protection I will close my account with them.

Another +1 for USAA! Sgreger, if you were in the military you should be able to join. The best bank and insurance company I've ever used hands down. The banking is all free including free checks. Plus they'll give you cash bonuses for using your check card if you use it as credit instead of debit. Plus you can use any ATM machine anywhere and they will refund any atm fees. I could go on and on about this company. You should be using them for everything possible IMO. The best thing about USAA is you can call them anytime and a real person will answer right away and be able to help you with whatever you need. Dude sign up! There website is awesome too and their bill pay as well. Also they have mobile banking and you can deposit checks with your freaking I-Phone. I hope they implement crackberry and android deposits soon.

Really thought I just suck at keeping all the receipts from using a debit/credit card and always something gets missed or the gas pump is out of paper so I forget to enter it and then you get zinged for another $40 by the bank if something doesn't clear. Cashiers do look at you funny when you pay with real money. I've seen them stare at their computer screen while I politely hold out my money. Sometimes I will wave it around like a fan to get their attention.

The banks are trying to squeeze you for every penny they can. They don't make any money on checking accounts and the method of stacking the transactions from greatest to least results in more income for them and they can apparently get away with it.
Actually Banks do make money on checking/savings acounts. Thats how they get money from Fed's to lend to borrowers, the more money they have in deposits the more they can borrow against it.

I prefer credit unions even though I work for a Bank on the mortgage side though.

Yah when I was in I always heard great things about USAA but never tried it out myself. You can use any atm and theyll refund the 2$ charge? Holy shit I may have to check this out. And calling them and talking to a real person, in MY army? I must investigate this further.

They will refund any and all atm fees, even those crazy $10 ones at clubs and concerts. Seriously sign up, they offer lots of services: Banking, investing, mortgages, auto loans, all kinds of insurance, retirement accounts, etc. All great stuff with the best customer service I've ever experienced. I've been with them for almost 20 years now.

Go with a local credit union. You have a say then. I only get one 6$ charge for all overdraft fees, and they will drop that if I talk with them.
Santa Cruz Community credit Union (plug for them)

Easy ways around them are pre-loaded debit cards. Not quite as convenient, but where thre's a will there's a way. And at least the fee's are up front and agreed to.
They end up costing more in fees. They are there for poor people. Who they then exploit.

That's it. I officially have it out for bank of america from now on.

So I told the customer service lady I wanted to close my account, and she said that I had to withdraw all of my money in the account first. So I told her I would do that today after work at my local branch. I then go to check my credit card statement because of my northerner order and find that they dropped my credit limit from $2,000 to only $500! I hope the CEO gets kicked in the nuts today on his way to way to work.

I normally don't use this credit card anyways but still, kind of a dick move.
