    Travel Thread

I work in the travel industry and traveling the world is my favorite thing to do, when I can afford it (which is not often enough; I have to use my industry perks to get anywhere on my own dime). I'd like to hear from those of you who have any travel stories or care to share or upcoming travel plans. It doesn't matter to me if it's a business trip to Omaha or a trekking odyssey in the Himalayas. Airline experiences are of particular interest to me since that is my line of work. Even places you wish you could go, I hope you share your thoughts.

I'm getting really excited for a trip I'm taking in September that came together miraculously and hastily. My girlfriend is a nanny, and the family she works for is going to Copenhagen and Paris in September for two weeks (I definitely asked her to take the train over to Malmö and get me some contraband snus). They are taking her with them and paying for everything, including her salary and a daily stipend, all because they are big-time foodies and they scored a reservation at some restaurant in Copenhagen where the head chef was recently named best chef in Europe or some such thing. It's kind of funny to me that they are going to pony up at least 10 grand to take themselves, their baby, and my girlfriend to Europe... FOR LUNCH. Lol. So now that she has free tickets to Europe, I hought it was time to make some power moves and put a trip together.

Using an airline net fare contract I have through the travel company I work for, I scored a one-way ticket Seattle to Paris for $431. I'll arrive September 17, spend 4 days in Pars, then when she's done with her work duties we are flying to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. There are a handful of pretty cheap tickets on this routing, all on Middle Eastern carriers, most of which are actually exceptionally nice airlines (like Emirates, Qatar, Etihad Airlines). I'm thinking that while we are changing planes in the region, we might as well stop over for 1 or two nights on the way to Asia. Right now I'm leaning toward Gulf Air and stopping in Bahrain, the tiny island in the Persian Gulf 20 miles from the Saudi Coast. It's the most relaxed and socially progressive of the Gulf states, and alcohol is legal and widely available. From what I've read, the Saudis often vacation there and use it as a place to safely kick back and drink cold beers in the hot sun. In September it's still between 100-115 degrees there, and as much as I despise the heat, I'm down to experience that kind of solar severity for just a day or two. One can also hire a jeep to go out on the dunes and rally, and of course there are lots of boating options.

Then we're going to check out Kuala Lumpur for a couple days, then head to one of the islands and rent a beachfront chalet for like 50 bucks a night and go snorkeling and kayaking in the South China Sea. I'm thinking Redang, or maybe Penang. I can't wait to eat shitloads of Malaysian food; curries, noodles, fish, and whatever the hell else they eat. We're going to chill island-style for 3 nights, then go back to KL and take the train 7 hours to Singapore. My pops has a million frequent flier miles on United, so I was able to talk him into getting us two mileage tickets one-way Singapore to Seattle via Chicago -- an 18.5 hour flight just to Chicago. That's going to be ****ing brutal. Singapore gets high marks from every traveler I've talked to, especially the food and cultural diversity. Mostly Chinese, but lots of Indian and Sri Lankan presence, and people from eveywhere else you could imagine. The street food at night is going to be off the hook. From what I've been reading, it's illegal to even bring poppy seeds for culinary purposes into the country, even in small quantities like on a bagel. It's illegal to chew gum in public (so I've heard, have not verified that), illegal to spit, and vandalism is punishable by caning and jail time. As big brother as they are, I bet there are cameras everywhere. It's going to be crazy, but I'm really looking forward to it. We were thinking Bangkok instead, which I bet is more fun and a good deal more relaxing and tolerant toward my normal behavior, but with only 2 weeks between Paris and getting home from Asia I'll save Thailand for a longer trip.

Well that's it, probably no one gives a shit, but I'm really looking forward to this trip, and I want to know if anyone else has any cool trips past, present, or future. I love travel stories and I have a lot of good ones, and it might be fun to share stories if anyone cares to participate. What's your favorite city? Favorite airlines? Where do you want to go? I can also help people find cheap international tickets sometimes, depending on the destination and your scheduling flexibility, so hit me up suckers.

I love to travel, and I don't get to do so nearly as often as I'd like. Favorite cities to visit are New York and Amsterdam. I've been to Europe twice, and want to go again when time and money permits.

This Labor Day weekend I'm taking a mini-vacation to Chicago. It will be a musical weekend -- first, I'm meeting up with friends for a Scissor Sisters concert, then the next day I plan to catch a little of the Chicago Jazz Festival in Grant Park. Somewhere in there I'm going to work in a visit to Iwan Ries & Co., one of the oldest and most notable tobacco shops in the US.

There are too many places to mention that I'd like to go but haven't been before, but just to name a couple: I'd like to visit Mexico, not the touristy parts, but there's an area south of Guadalajara that I'd love to explore. And ever since I read James Michener's Alaska, I've wanted to visit there, maybe on a cruise.

      good for you Roo.

I am going to fort lauderdale this thursday to drop off some baby parrots. But I'm not even leaving the airport in florida. I'll be home early that evening. Not very much fun......except counting the $ from the sale of the babies.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Pipensnus, a jazz festival in Chicago sounds like lots of fun. I've always wanted to visit Chicago and when I do, I'm going to have to call on BigBlue1 and PP for reach-arounds and airport transfers upon arrival. BigBlue will drive, I'll sit shotgun and PP can sit behind me and reach around. Back to being serious, imagine the smell and selection inside one of America's oldest tobacco shops? I bet that will be a great weekend.

PP, tell me about flying with parrots. I assume they can't be put under the seat in the cabin, like a cat? Are you flying American direct to FLL? What do they charge for bringing parrots along? You should use those earnings to bring the wife and hit the beach for a couple days. Or take one of those 4 day cruises to the Bahamas.

I hate traveling. I spend 40%-50% of my time traveling back and forth across the country for work and hate it. It sux as now whenever I vacation I don't go anywhere as I hate to even approach an airport.

Roo, sounds like a great trip.

I'm flying up to NY for my brother's wedding with my kids in October for 4 days. I'll probably fly into Newark. I hate flying into or out from JFK, too many pilots miss the runway there...

Unfortunately you can't transmit aromas through the Internet... yet. But if you want to have a look at Iwan Ries, there's a 360 degree virtual tour on their website: http://www.iwanries.com/

Holy crap I would love to spend a couple hours in there. That virtual tour reminded me of walking into Toys R Us or an enormous candy store as a little kid. They should sell liquor and a huge variety of imported beer, along with Cuban cigars and every single brand of Swedish snus ever made, and just go ahead and make it the Best Store in the World

$100 to put a carrier under the seat in cabin. Spirit airlines non-stop. they are 1 lb chicks so up to 3 fit comfortably.

The wife and I will be traveling to europe before too long. We want to take a mediterranean cruise. But it won't be untill after I sell this place and move.

you should visit brookfield zoo in chicago. bigblue1 tells me the orangutans give good reach arounds.....

Let me know about that cruise PP. I'm not a travel agent but I have the same capabilities so if the cruise operator gives commission to agents, I could book it for you and pass the commission back to you. For example, if they give me 10% commission, I could tell them it's for a friend and use your credit card to submit payment for 90% of the total cost. Might save you a couple hun. I did a Mediterranean cruise once with my family when my parents were still together and I was about to go to college. Started in Genoa, Italy, stopped in Napoli, Sicily, Tunisia, Mallorca, Barcelona, then my brother and I got off the boat in Marseille and trained up through Switzerland, Munich, then Amsterdam. A Mediterranean cruise sounds like great idea for a man your age. It's a very relaxing way to see a lot of places and not have to keep unpacking and packing your shit and running around all over the place.

                            Fuerteventura??

Have you guys been to Fuerteventura? It was one of those island that had always been on my traveling plan but had somehow never visited. But after reading this other article from canaryislandsinfo.co.uk/fuerteventura/places/ makes me more willing to do some last minute changes on my travel list. They say that the waves in Costa calma and Playa de Sotavento would make a perfect for surfers and many water activities. And if your not into some water action I'm very sure that theirs a lot more to do in this fine island.

I love traveling by train but only in the US and Canada. Is anyone aware of a forum or blog that is a one stop shop for the best train travel pricing and trips? Amtrak and VIA play so many games with promotions it's almost impossible to stay on top of them. I have three trips I want to do - The VIA Canadian from Toronto to Vancouver; Amtrak's California Zephyr; and, Amtrak's Adirondack. I'm looking for both pricing and itinerary info along with the best time to do these trips.

                              Then there's this: http://www.travelandleisure.com/trip...try-train-ride
