    Should I jailbreak my IPAD?

So I have never jailbroken anything and am not even completely clear about what the benefits/disadvantages of doing so may be. Can someone who has jailbroken an iphone or ipad before give me the lowdown on whether it is a good idea?

    From what I gather:

    - By jailbreaking it, you have access to some new app store that isn't run by the apple NAZI's

    - Most of the software in this store is crap and does nothing but lag your ipad/phone

    - It voids the warrants

-That you can somehow save your system so that if you need to send it in for warranty, you can restore your system to it's pre-jailbroken state and apple will never find out and therefore you warranty will still be good

Is it a good idea to jailbreak my ipad? Is it true I can jailbreak it, then restore it back to normal if necessary? Are the programs in the Cydia (or whatever it's called) app store worth the hastle. Are they free and if not how do I pay. Will it lag or ruin my system?

Anyone who has any firsthand knowledge of this would be greatly appreciated.

Furthermore: JAILBREAKING IS NOW ENDORSED BY THE U.S. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

Owners of Apple Inc.’s iPhone can unlock the device to use applications not authorized by the company, the U.S. Library of Congress said.
"Librarian of Congress James H. Billington added the practice, described in the ruling as “jailbreaking,” to a list of actions that don’t violate copyright protections. "

“Now people can go ahead and fix their phones and jailbreak them so they can run all sorts of different applications,” said Corynne McSherry, the group’s senior staff attorney, in an interview. “They can make full use of the phone they bought without some kind of legal liability hanging over their head.”

“When someone buys a kitchen blender, they don’t expect it to refuse to make a margarita,” Handel said in an interview. “And when they buy an iPhone, they don’t expect it to not run reasonable software.”

I heard that there is no such thing as jailbreaking and that the whole notion that apple as a company even exists is just zionist propaganda.

.. Okay, this is getting bad, i'm derailing my own threads now. Really though guys, I know we have a bunch of tech nerds on here, is jailbreaking a good idea or no? I just want to know if it will in any way damage my Ipad.

I don't follow Apple, as I refuse to buy their products. I can't give much information in that regard.

          sgreger1,

Back in the old days before the App Store, jailbreaking the iPhone had very definite benefits (I did it myself). Now it's just a matter of being able to unlock the device (wouldn't matter on a wifi only iPad) or being able to install non-Apple approved apps. There is a danger as you could install apps that have malware in them, which could do things like keystroke monitoring / reporting, spamming your contacts, culling your personal information, etc. My recommendation would be two-fold; first, if you do want to do it, back up your current iPad, restore to original and avoid putting anything personal on it, then hack away as there is nothing to lose, and 2nd, unless there is a specific app you want to install/use that is not approved, why take the chance (unless you just want to try it, in which case recommendation #1 applies).

Also, yes, generally you can restore to original (I did it several times on my iPhone). The case where you can't is if the jailbreak version of the firmware is older than the installed version. In that case you may not be able to jailbreak in the first place (Apple loves breaking jailbreaking with each new version, and they just came out with a new update for iPad a couple weeks ago). Just make sure the jailbreak software is setup to work with the installed version of the firmware you currently have on your iPad.

            Yes.

I jailbroke my first iPhone with 1.0.1 and it was awesome.

Cydia and Installer were the first "App Stores" everything was free then and it's where a lot of the popular apps started.

The latest Cydia has some paid apps and stuff, but you can do a LOT with the apps in there.

I use it mainly for theming, rooting and other small apps the App Store won't approve.

            Good shit.

Do it, you won't be disappointed.
As long as you're smart...wait...not a dumbass. you won't do much harm. :P

Thanks Coderguy. I was just wondering if I can do it without permanently messing up my warranty. I don't even know what other apps are available and I don't mind paying for stuff most of the time. I was just wondering if I was missing out on some cool new world that lie jsut beyond apple's DRM laced content. I don't need to tether or anything (and can't since it's wi-fi only) so mainly it was just to get new games.

I know they have a website that reviews the apps and tells which ones are stable and malware free and which ones are not so I suppose I could use that.

I want to do it if it will give me access to something cool, but considering how much it costs to buy one of these things, i'd like to not void the warranty (or not let them find out I voided the warranty) if at all possible. I just didn't know what benefits may come along with it.

I've always jailbroke my i devices. In the past, the main reason was for theming and backgrounding. My iPad is jailbroken and it works great. I have it jailbroken mainly for SBSettings, a nifty program called lock calendar and backgrounding. They are available for free from Cydia. As far as it slowing your system down or messing anything up? Not so much any more. I jailbroke my 3G, both my wife and my 3GS and as soon as its released, by iPhone 4.

Jailbreaking is a breeze, go to spiritjb.com, download a small program and its done in about 1 minute. Make sure to back up your device to iTunes beforehand though!

Here are some pics of mine jailbroken:

How do I back up things in Itunes? And the spiritjb.com site works for the ipad? Sweet. I'm going to go for it. What are your favorite programs that you've found usefull or cool and that work properly? I'm just afraid that apple will one day make some patch that shuts down any jailbroken devices, kinda of like what Microsoft just pulled on people using non-authentic versions of windows.

Yeah the only way it would void your warrantee would be if you had to take it in for service and you took a jailbroken ipad in, or if you told them. If you restore before taking it in they will never know. Although, if you "brick" it by accident and have to take it in, you are screwed.

But as c.nash so eloquently put it, "As long as you're smart...wait...not a dumbass. you won't do much harm. :P"

It would be hard for you to brick it as you don't really know enough to do that, haha. Neither do I! Most bricking occurs while trying to do sim card swapping. Backgrounder is a cool app

Backgrounder, SBSettings, Lock Calendar, FullForce (this one kicks serious ass, it basically allows you to run old iPhone apps at the native iPad resolution. Not everything works, but when they do WOW! Facebook is an example of one that works incredibly. Also, most games dont work but Angry birds does :P)

Also, Categories is awesome too. It allows you to make folders on iOS 3.2 to hide all your programs in so you don't have 10 pages of crap.

How to back up your device via iTunes:

Plug in your device and it automatically does! Make sure to transfer all your app purchases to your computer. You may need to authorize it.

I'm so jealous of all of you. I talk on a shitty Motorola RAZR2. And the only Apple device I have is a last gen Ipod Nano. I love my Nano, and have used it tons. I could only imagine how useful an Iphone, Ipod Touch, or Ipad would be to me. I really want to play that new Office Heroes game.

I had the first 3 versions of the iPhone and both versions of the iPad. I recently switched from iPhone to the Sprint HTC EVO 4G and LOVE it. I will never go back to iPhone. I do however still love my iPad and use it all the time.
