So I have never jailbroken anything and am not even completely clear about what the benefits/disadvantages of doing so may be. Can someone who has jailbroken an iphone or ipad before give me the lowdown on whether it is a good idea?
From what I gather:
- By jailbreaking it, you have access to some new app store that isn't run by the apple NAZI's
- Most of the software in this store is crap and does nothing but lag your ipad/phone
- It voids the warrants
-That you can somehow save your system so that if you need to send it in for warranty, you can restore your system to it's pre-jailbroken state and apple will never find out and therefore you warranty will still be good
Is it a good idea to jailbreak my ipad? Is it true I can jailbreak it, then restore it back to normal if necessary? Are the programs in the Cydia (or whatever it's called) app store worth the hastle. Are they free and if not how do I pay. Will it lag or ruin my system?
Anyone who has any firsthand knowledge of this would be greatly appreciated.
Furthermore: JAILBREAKING IS NOW ENDORSED BY THE U.S. LIBRARY OF CONGRESS
Owners of Apple Inc.’s iPhone can unlock the device to use applications not authorized by the company, the U.S. Library of Congress said.
"Librarian of Congress James H. Billington added the practice, described in the ruling as “jailbreaking,” to a list of actions that don’t violate copyright protections. "
“Now people can go ahead and fix their phones and jailbreak them so they can run all sorts of different applications,” said Corynne McSherry, the group’s senior staff attorney, in an interview. “They can make full use of the phone they bought without some kind of legal liability hanging over their head.”
“When someone buys a kitchen blender, they don’t expect it to refuse to make a margarita,” Handel said in an interview. “And when they buy an iPhone, they don’t expect it to not run reasonable software.”
