The actual color of the martian soil is much more diverse than just red like we had always imagined in the past. A lot of blues and greys mixed in with some brown and dark red is what most of the surface looks like. It just looks red to us because of the atmosphere, just like Earth would probably look blue to then, even though our terrain is often brown and green and everything inbetween.
