How to turn off spellcheck on the iPhone

    ~
"Isn't there some way to turn off spellcheck on the iPhone?"

For those having a problem with the iPhone spellcheck screwing up their posts:

Apple iPhone 2.2: Switch Off Automatic Spellcheck

Finally we are now able to switch off Automatic Spellcheck on our Apple iPhone; thanks to the 2.2 update we are now able to turn off this annoying feature if we choose. Now we can send texts with words that do not sound right, without the fear that the automatic spellcheck won’t correct it at the last minute.

Turning of this function is very simple, just go to settings, then general and keyboard. Once there you will be able to turn off auto correction. This is such a simple thing to do I know, but there have been many people who have just missed it.

For some having Automatic Spellcheck is very important, but in an age where we send text messages with abbreviated words, the auto correction can be a bit of a nuisance. Now you will be able to speed text without the worry of the iPhone changing the word to something different.

DISCLAIMER: I don't have an iPhone but an interwebz search brought up this solution.

That should take care of the iPhone insisting that snus is anus!

FYI, to keep spell check/auto-correction turned on but to stop it from "correcting" particular words, when the iPhone brings up the little box with the replacement word, hit the little "x" in the corner. Once you have done this twice for a particular word, it turns off the "correction" for that word. This will stop your iPhone from turning "snus" into "anus."

          Yeah. I misspelled grammar. :P

Didn't even notice it either, and OP is one of the only abbreviations I use. That is except for stuff like FTW, LOL, ROFL, etc. However, every other word being abbreviated is just annoying. And people that tYp LiKe ThIS or with no punctuation is ****ing ANNOYING!

I do agree with you that sometimes it can be very distracting.
One of the things I've learned over the years is that the interwebz
seem to breed impatience -- everybody's in a rush to get nowhere
and once there, twiddle-thumbs becomes a key activity. Sometimes
I think I'm too picky but old habits die hard; plus, whatever gets
published on the internet is pretty much forever.

            Texting, I'm hoping, is the main reason people use abbreviations;
then again, schools don't seem to stress reading, writing, and arithmetic
like they used to. I know if I had to use a keypad whose keys were
one-third the size of my fingers, I'd certainly look for ways to shorten
the aggravation and keep my blood pressure down.

SIDENOTE: Check out this article .. u mite likit!! It's intrestink!

Had a buddy stop by last night. His daughter is off working in the
'big city' for the summer. Her iPhone is her constant companion,
              and she has a laptop.

He says he's fine with all the abbreviations when she's texting
'cause the messages are generally brief. But when she sends an
email from her laptop to his clunker desktop and she abbreviates
heavily in the message, he'll return it to her and ask for a translation.
Needless to say, she's pretty much learned her lesson by now!
Evidently they don't do phone emailing. (And she probably
doesn't send him too many emails!)

Looking through the posts in the different threads, I didn't find
an overabundance of abbreviations except for some very short
              posts ......... seemingly from smartphones.

And anus was nowhere to be found!!!

I just can't understand it, even in texts I use puncuation and everything...

That way doesn't hurt, the change in the other direction does.
