This dog really is one man's best friend.

Dog saves life of Michigan owner Jerry Douthett by biting off his toe

Kiko has been called a hero for helping the man realize that he has Type 2 diabetes.

The life of Michigan resident Jerry Douthett was saved after his dog bit off his toe and alerted him to the seriousness of an infection.

The life of Michigan resident Jerry Douthett was saved after his dog bit off his toe and alerted him to the seriousness of an infection.

This dog really is one man's best friend.

A Michigan man's life was saved after his terrier bit off his big toe, alerting him to the seriousness of an infection while he was passed out drunk, according to The Grand Rapids Press.

Despite wife Rosie's pleas, Jerry Douthett, a 48-year-old musician from Rockford, for months avoided going to a doctor to get his foot examined.

But after a heavy night of drinking approximately half a dozen beers and margaritas, Douthett passed out at home. That's when dog Kiko took his cue.

"I woke up and the dog was laying alongside my foot, then I looked and blood was everywhere," Douthett told Wood TV, a local NBC affiliate. "I ran to the bathroom and screamed for [Rosie] to come in. I went to the bathroom, rinsed it off and it was gone."

At the hospital, doctors found a bone infection and amputated the rest of his toe. Kiko has been called a hero for helping the man realize that he has Type 2 diabetes.

Kiko still resides with the family, but is being observed by authorities to make sure he is does not have rabies.

According to the local newspaper, Douthett said he has since given up alcohol. He has also changed his sleeping habits.

"I wear shoes to bed now," he said.

I'll bet Kiko has sworn off toes! In fact, he's probably now a vegan.

    btw, what's for lunch?

I've heard of dogs growling at, nibbling on, or barking at infected or cancerous areas of a person's body before, but never heard of a canine spontaneously deciding to amputate on the spot. That's pretty amazing. The man sounds like a class A loser, though. The dog can do better.

Lol, Gotta love the judgemental. The last line says he has been off alcohol since and changed his sleeping habits. Sounds like a man trying to change his life there. We all can not be perfect, unless you can teach us how.

        An interesting addendum...

Douthett's wife, Rosee, a registered nurse, had actually suspected her husband
had diabetes and insisted he get checked out.

But before he did so, he had a few beers.

        And then a few margaritas.

After that, he went home, passed out, and Kiko got to work.

Weird story, but Bruce Rossman, a media relations manager at Spectrum Health,
        confirms that it's true.

The dog is not a hero! The dog found a tasty snack. It just happened to be attached to the owners leg.

When it's my time to go, I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle did....... Not screaming in terror like his passengers

If he's changed, that's great. My comment was made for amusement purposes only. Probably only my own since I admit I have an odd sense of humor. Most people would make a comment about someone being a loser and say the wife could do better, I was trying to be ironic by positioning it that the dog could do better. I don't know the guy. He could be a totally awesome guy who's only fault is that despite being married to a medical professional he doesn't want to heed her advice about getting a potentially life-threatening issue checked out.

You notice he says he quit drinking and sleeps with his shoes on (odd but understandable) but that he doesn't say he's going to listen to his wife more often. Maybe I should have worded it as ""Men are class A losers. The dog could do better." But I figure with the high male to female ratio on this board that wouldn't go over well either.

SsHhhhh!!! Our health care system is in bad enough shape already. I don't want my next primary care visit to be to a kennel.
