iPhone 4, buy it or wait?

So I am looking at getting a new phone. Right now I have metro PCS, I get everything (minutes, texts, internet, 411 etc) for $50 a month. For me and my wife that makes it $110 a month after taxes for unlimited everything.

I am looking at buying the Iphone 4. I played with it yesterday and it seems pretty high-speed. Anyone own one of these yet? I heard about the deathgrip thing and am not sure if it's been resolved yet.

We would get the lowest plan, 700 minutes 4 gigs of data and unlimited texts, for about $200 a month. So it would be about 90$ more a month than i'm currently which i'm okay with (since metro PCS only works in the bay area and has crappy service and cheap phones).

And why is the max you can buy 4 gigs. Wouldn't you go through 4 gigs really fast? I don't know since I never metered my usage.

People with iphones or AT&T, do you go over your data plan limitations, is the iphone 4 worth it, and am I a douche for being such an apple fanboy as of late?

I can't imagine why anyone would want to pay that much for cellular phone service. I was up to about $140 / mo for three phones on a family plan. I made some strategic cuts (mostly my Internet access and text messaging) and got it down to $115. I wish I could cut it even more.

But, I understand the lure. It is a "lifestyle" thing.

I've had one for a few monthes now. I like it...

I've been through just about every phone imaginable and the iPhone is definitely one of the smoothest and the apps can't be beat.

I admit, I don't know much about the Iphone 4, from the commercials it looks like an updated Iphone 3G/3GS. 4 has a webcam and can access 4g networks? Anything else? I have the 3GS and am completely satisfied with that and never have gone over my data limit, I didn't even know there were limits until now!

Well like I said, my current plan is 110$ with unlimited everything, but it only works near san francisco. My new office location (and my wife's) is outside of that area so we are getting spotty coverage. No matter what phone I get I am going to have to pay more money. I am getting their cheapest plan which is $140, but with taxes and crap it'll probably be $190, who knows. I use a lot of internet and a LOT of text messages as texting is my primary method of communication during the day, so I can't really cut back much on that. Don't care much about the lifestyle thing, but if i'm going to upgrade my phone I may as well get a decent one. I play with it a lot while I am waiting for things or in the bathroom

No, 4th generation but still 3g network. It has multitasking so you can run multiple programs at once, it has the highest resolution screen available for any mobile device, you can make folders now (thank god, I hate 10 pages of apps), and you can have video phone calls and stuff. Not a whole lot of improvement, some basic GUI upgrades is about it. It's just that they are only selling the 4g one now so it's kinda what I have to go with. My wife had an iphone before (like first gen) and it seemed pretty legit.

I already have a lot of apple apps so it would be nice since I can just transfer them over to my cellphone from my ipod touch and stuff, instead of having to re-purchase them for a new device.

I dunno, just wondering if anyone else had owned one yet. I like android but the iphone seems to still have the best GUI and is the smoothest running (plus best apps)

That was the best part of the Iphone 3G/S update last month - my 3GS does all that stuff minus the highest screen reso and video calls.

Just an FYI - I do not use a case or screen protector on my iphone, my friends think I am insane. I just like it neked! I abuse the heck out of it too, throw it in my purse or bottom of backpack, let my kid with nasty, sticky candy fingers play it and I have dropped the phone several times on concrete - once from about 4 feet high and there are absolutely no scratches or dings on it! For that reason alone, I give the iphone 2 thumbs up!

Oh yah, I forgot they allow the older ones to update to OS4. Way cool, i'm still waiting for the OS4 upgrade for my ipad, anyone know when that's coming? And I have an itouch and i'm the same as you, no case or anything and my 1.5 year old abuses it and throws it and it never gets scratched lol. Apple makes quality products.

I;m probably going to buy it either way since no other phones seem to be up to speed with apple yet. I wish this wasn't the case because I dislike apples business model and close environments, but they are consistently making the best products so i have to go with them untill the rest of the industry catches up.

Android is growing fast bit won't compete with the app store I've had android phones and they are great. They start to lag a little over time though. Apple really has perfected a lot of aspects of the smartphone. Especially the touch screen smartphone. Mine is kinda nekkid. Lol I have a bestskinsever skin on it and that's all.

The iPhone 4 is also the soonest smartphone ever. And it really is comfortable and really nice. I was hesitant to get one, but once my company got it for me I was happy.

Yah android or microsoft products only work for a while, then they start slowing down, getting viruses etc. Apple costs a lot (It's $250 for the phone), but it is top quality, will never slow down, is durable, dependable, requires no service, and lasts forever. Higher quality is worth the money. Never lags ever and has much more content available for it. I hate buying windows products that just get super slow after a year, even when you running a 4ghz processor on it lol.

Untill some sort of competition shows itself, Apple has my money. So far no one is able to compete or has made similar products that are worth the money. I really wish someone would step up to the plate and start competing. Untill then, apple will slowly take over the world like MS once did.

And it really makes it easy to type exactly the word you mean to type.

In all seriousness, I've had an iPhone 3GS for over a year now and really love it. It's amazing the stuff I do on this phone that I never thought I'd "need" a phone for. (I use it constantly, and probably less than 5% of that use is actually talking on the phone.) I'm tempted to get the iPhone 4, but have held off to make sure it had no major bugs and because of the expense of upgrading (would be double for me since I wouldn't dare upgrade my own without getting the upgrade for my wife, who still has only the iPhone 3G).

About data plans, AT&T used to require iPhone users to purchase an unlimited data plan, so that's what I and most people who have had an iPhone for a while have. They are now offering the cheaper limited data plans to new customers.

Well AT&T couldn't handle the volume, thats why they took away the unlimited plan. now it's $25 for 4 gigs. I am just concerned that 4 gigs isn't a lot. then again i mainly just browse websites, but if I use hulu on my iphone, do you think it will breach the 4 gig threshold? If you go over they make you buy another 4 gigs for an additional $25 that month.

I just don't want to get shafted with paying more than I expect my bill to be. I budget things down to the dollar and I can't have the bills changing every month.

Are you able to use hulu plus on an iPhone? Regular hulu you can't because it relies on Flash, which iPhone doesn't have. So I dunno, doing a lot of streaming video might bump you over the limit. But it also depends where you use it--when you use the iPhone over wifi instead of 3G, it doesn't count toward your data usage. I probably don't even come close to using 4 gigs a month over 3G because most of my online usage is over wifi at home or office. Anyway, I think AT&T is supposed to send you a warning text or something if you're going over your limit, and if you always wind up going over your limit they'd probably let you move up to a higher or unlimited plan where you would pay more but at least have predictability.
