This thread has a lot of lengthy posts so if someone else already mentioned this then...sorry. I noticed that all the news stations around here were covering stories today about the Empire State Building being illuminated in green in honor of the Islamic holiday Eida-Al-Fitr (or something like that).

I know that the Empire building does this year round for many events, and that this isn't the first time that they have honored the Islamic holiday, but this is the first time that I've noticed so much publicity and news coverage about it.

It appears to me that the media is now trying to kiss the ass of the Muslim world in an effort to say "We're sorry! But look...we're honoring one of your holidays! Will you ever forgive us?"

Maybe I've blown this completely out of proportion and am having a bitter day.

Eid is only the (second) most important holiday of the Muslim world.

I know Ramadan is the one where they can attack their own people but we can't defend out of respect for their religion. Is that one the first?

There are several Eid holidays which are sacred to Islam. Comparing importance is like comparing Christmas to Easter.

If you dressed as Santa in Afganistan, you'd be beheaded.

Yes it's juvenile and asinine. However, don't group all Muslims under the "they" you used.

Fair enough. Now I do have a serious question about Islam (and this is open to anyone's reply), one that I have been wondering about for a while (and I feel the same about all religions but this question is particularly Islam). And please correct me if I am off as admittedly I know hardly anything about it other than what I see around (media, comments, etc.)

What is the appeal of the religion? Especially for women. There doesn't seem to be much in the way of freedom of choice. Many things are forbidden (two of my favorites; porn and alcohol for instance). I have just been wondering why someone would willingly join (meaning not born into it or forced into it by marriage).

i am what some might call a hard nose Christian and i don't apologize for it either. i do not support that guys burning of the Quran NOT because the Quran is good. Because in today's world what he is doing and or how he is doing it is political. some well known Christians think us Christians should be involved as a church in politics, i do not find any support of that in the Bible.

Christianity comes before my nationalistic point of view. i am saying i think he is wrong but wrong from a Biblical point of view.

As a us citizen i question why so many people in our government are hard line supporters of separation of Church and State but not in this situation. Even the president has publicly condemned what a legal, registered church chooses to do (Legally) in the course of it's own church business.

Regardless of how wrong, stupid, ugly, redneck, backwards, stuck in the 70s haircut or any other expression one uses to describe the Quran burner it is not the presidents job to express himself about Church matters.

I am used to being blasted so don't think you can say anything that will hurt my feelings or back me down haha.

Seriously I think Obama and everyone else has the right to think and say what they may as private citizens. When they step into a governmental position that is paid for by the public they are authorized to only speak for themselves and not in their official roll. If a judge talks religion he/she may face being disbarred. I that same person crosses that same line in the other direction why is it not the same thing?

From my own personal point of view i feel like most people need to study Islam before they think they know anything about it. if you've never even held a copy or read one online then you are likely not an expert.

                          1) Jesus (God)
                          2) Country

Well, a lot of the restrictions aren't actually in the Qur'an itself, they're in those haditha tom keeps mentioning as the reason modern Islam is evil. Porn and alcohol (or any intoxicants, save nicotine and pharmaceuticals) are forbidden, but porn's forbidden in Christianity too, as is masturbation. How many Christians does that stop from those things? Same with Islam. The veil isn't mandatory, it's just certain imam's interpretations of what modest dress is, again something that Christians and Jews are supposed to adhere to as well. To make a long story short, a lot of the crap Muslim women "have" to put up with is patriarchal societies using the majority religion to ensure that men stay in power and women stay subservient. Same reason there were so many restrictions for what women could do in Europe 150+ years ago. THe Qur'an actually gives women a fair deal of freedom in certain areas, like divorce. But the women in these cultures frequently aren't taught to read at a very high level, if at all, and the guys just gloss over those passages when the ladies are around.

Edit: Also, people will do a lot of stupid crap to feel accepted, and some of the most stupid things I've ever seen done were done by women for one of the "loves of their life." You may as well ask why do women stay in abusive relationships in the US when they know they can get help from the government/police getting out of them? A lot of times, they just don't like to admit how much of a bum deal they're getting from this "love" of theirs.

Thanks shikitohno, good information. Like I said I feel that way about all religions. I personally wouldn't imagine ever joining any of them. We have to give up enough personal freedoms in our every day life, don't understand why people volunteer to give up more so someone can tell them how to live.

It's sad many practicing Christians don't think the same way. I don't find any issue with burning the Qur'an, although it is unfortunate that some individuals feel the need to be incendiary in a very hateful manner.

I agree the President shouldn't be stepping in. It's not a governmental matter even though our troops overseas might be affected by those burning a holy book on an important religious holiday.
