Ya'know, the more I think about this, I think if this guy caves, and doesn't do it, this is another triumph of the terrorists, and a further implementation of Sharia law to take away our what's left American freedoms. I mean, under the threat of Islamic terrorism, we can no longer exercise our freedoms of expression. This is almost just like the South Park debacle, and now, because of the threat of Islamo-terror, they had to censor their cartoon image of Muhammed, and not even allow the airing of his name on the show. This is all a prime example of how Islam forces it's sharia law onto citizens of another country, and another culture, and we are fools if we bow to them.

Exactly! The media and politicians are forcing us to live by the terrorist's rules under threat of violence. I missed when exactly it happened but when did America go from, "We will fight and die to protect our freedoms!" to "Sorry, did we offend you? We won't do it again."? It's BS!

james- a while back, I was on a spiritual quest, and free and single to persue these interests. I have studied and participated in many. I am not an expert, but I did want to learn about them in my own quest to understand, at least what they taught. They all have good points, and points I disagreed with. It was an important part of my life, though these days I am an unaffiliated mystic, mainly influenced by the far eastern tradtions.

Much respect to you, that's why I don't want any spiritual influences pushed on my children. I think everyone should be to do the research and find the faith or lack of faith that's right for them.

U.S. President Barack Obama has spoken out strongly against a Florida minister's plan to burn copies of the Quran, and White House officials say they may try to contact the pastor directly to get him to change his plans.

The Reverend Terry Jones has said repeatedly this week that he intends to burn Qurans on Saturday, September 11, as a protest against "radical Islam." But on Thursday he added that he would re-examine his plan if he was contacted by officials at the White House, Pentagon or State Department.

President Obama said publicly burning the Quran is a destructive and dangerous act. He also said the minister's plan is an attention-seeking "stunt" that could endanger U.S. troops, but also is a valid exercise of free-speech rights under the U.S. legal system.

Mr. Obama said the Florida protest could turn out to be "a recruitment bonanza for al-Qaida" and trigger violent counter-protests.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said Thursday that Quran burnings could set back the U.S. government's efforts to demonstrate that it is not at war with Islam, but is at war with those who "perverted the values and beliefs of that religion."

Gibbs and other senior officials said they are discussing how to respond to Jones' hint that he might suspend his book-burning plan, out of concern that the minister's tactics could "provoke other extremists" to threaten spectacular protests in order to get attention.

The U.S. State Department issued a worldwide travel alert Thursday warning U.S. citizens of the potential for anti-U.S. demonstrations in other countries in response to the Quran burning plans.

At this point it doesn't matter what he does, the damage has been done. The only source of information most of the radical followers have is from their leaders, who I am sure are milking this for all it's worth and I doubt very much if these "leaders" will tell their sheep, "OK, no harm no foul, it was just one guy and he's changed his mind, the rest of the Americans and Christians are good so stop acting up."

Religion has killed more people than anything else. Perhaps not all of them are responsible for death and destruction, but I'd argue that by and large organized religion creates more problems on this planet than is helps.

I haven't set foot in a church in a long time. I went a year or so ago just for...well...I'm not sure really. My wife goes every now and again and she just enrolled the kids in catechism. Huh. Anyhow, I looked around and tried to see if I felt that these people that were there praying were true believers...would they die in the name of their god? I think that there isn't a chance that even a fraction of a percent of people would. I felt that most people there were there to make themselves feel better about things, themselves, life, others, whatever. Just a thought I had once...

Perhaps the radicals that are willing to kill and die for religion are the true believers, if that's the case it should be acknowledged but it only supports the argument that organized religions are a delusion of what people really need. Too often we are led to believe what people tell us to believe instead of listening to the purest thoughts of what is right or wrong...those thoughts that come from within.

This type of behavior also proves that religion degrades the progress of the human species.

I'd love to hear Shiktohono (sp) chime in on this one.

We also have our own domestic terrorists. Yes they're not as well-funded as al Qaeda was, but they still do take lives and disrupt the peace.

Of course we do, we get about 1 a year, occasionally more. Not anywhere near the levels we see with the more well-funded cells like Alquaida. We mainly get disgruntled employees or students shooting their boss/teacher. Less ideological and more based on rage.

As I said Muslims do have some adjustments to make, and they will need to keep fighting each other and killing each other off until they can come to some sort of consensus which modernizes Islam. Our meddling in their business is what inspires the extremists and helps with their recruitment.

Yah, we could accomplish more to quell terrorism by leaving them alone and not giving them reasons to hate us. We've been putting our nose in their business, and trying to sell them something they don't want for way too long.

I would say yes, islamophobia, though I should change my word from "warranted" to "expected". It should be expected that if a particular religious group starts flying planes into buildings, blowing up navy vessels, bombing embassies and UN aid camps etc, it MAY just give you a bad rap. I mean right? What if christian radicals were out blowing up military craft and bombing foreign embassies, spending years training in other countries and infiltrating them from within just so they could one day fly their own planes into their skyscrapers and kill thousands of innocents in a firey blaze etc. Don't you think people would be pissed at christians? People make broad generalisations and it's just never going to change.

I mean to say that it should be expected that if you cause so much terror on such a massively large scale to the point where the UN's main focus is discussing how to deal with you and all the major superpowers are out to get you, then maybe, just MAYBE, you could see why people hate you, or have a "phobia" of you or people who they associate with you. Not saying it's right, but it's kind of how things work. If the crusades were happening right now, you would be talking about all the evil christians are doing in the world today, in the same way people are talking about Islam, and you would be called a "chistophobe".

Yes, several Muslim countries aren't secular. Our biggest oil buddies the Saudis are the worst, and places like Pakistan and Afghanistan desire to follow Sharia law to keep Islam "pure" from western influence.

That doesn't mean you can't open a church in most other Muslim nations, which are much more secular. There's just a few countries which aspire to follow religious law to a T.

Oh i'm well aware of that. There are christian churches in Iraq and Afghanistan for god's sake! (no pun intended). Lots of majority muslim countries allow other religions, i'm not ignorant of that. And yes, ironically our closest muslim allies are usually the worst offenders. That's because this is all about business and money, and not about freedom or democracy. Since when has a major superpower EVER in world history given two shits about helping out the lesser countries if it was not to their gain?

Pastor: Quran-burning off if mosque moves - Politics - White House

The pastor planning to burn Qurans on the Sept. 11 anniversary said Thursday that he plans to call off the event if the Muslim group seeking to build a mosque near the World Trade Center site agrees to move the project.

"We would consider that a sign from God," the Rev. Terry Jones told reporters.

It was unclear whether such a commitment from the Muslim group was forthcoming, though some reports said Jones and the leader of the mosque project had spoken earlier Thursday.

"I have his word that he will move the mosque to a different location," Jones said.

Jones also said he would travel to New York on Saturday to meet with officials of the mosque project.

C'mon dude. Everyone realizes it's a ploy to prove how irrationally upset the radicals get (and a ploy for undue attention). Even though free speech and all, I don't want more people to die when the event is protested in the Muslim world.

Trump offers to buy out NYC mosque investor

He says he wants to end 'a very serious, inflammatory, and highly divisive situation'


NEW YORK — Donald Trump is offering to buy out one of the major investors in the real estate partnership that controls the site near ground zero where a Muslim group wants to build a 13-story Islamic center and mosque.

In a letter released Thursday by Trump's publicist, the real estate investor told Hisham Elzanaty that he would buy his stake in the lower Manhattan building for 25 percent more than whatever he paid.

"I am making this offer as a resident of New York and citizen of the United States, not because I think the location is a spectacular one (because it is not), but because it will end a very serious, inflammatory, and highly divisive situation that is destined, in my opinion, to only get worse," the letter said.

Trump also attached a condition to his offer: He said that as part of the deal, the backers of the mosque project would need to promise that any new mosque they constructed would be at least five blocks farther away from the World Trade Center site.
