Colin Powell: Illegal immigrants do essential work in the U.S.

    ~
Powell: Illegal immigrants do my home repairs

WASHINGTON — Former Secretary of State Colin Powell says illegal immigrants do essential work in the U.S. and he has firsthand knowledge of that — because they fix his house.

Powell, a moderate Republican, urged his party Sunday to support immigration generally because it is "what's keeping this country's lifeblood moving forward."

In an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press," he said a path to legal status should be offered to illegal immigrants because they "are doing things we need done in this country."He added: "They're all over my house, doing things whenever I call for repairs, and I'm sure you've seen them at your house. We've got to find a way to bring these people out of the darkness and give them some kind of status."

Powell did not say whether he's hired illegal immigrants directly or they showed up with contractors.

Powell was President George W. Bush's first-term secretary of state and the nation's top military officer in the presidency of Bush's father and in the early months of the Clinton administration. Despite his Republican standing — he was once considered a formidable prospect for the GOP presidential or vice presidential nominations but stayed out of contention — he endorsed Democrat Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election.

In lamenting the party's rightward drift Sunday, he said Republicans must not become anti-immigration and spoke in support of legislation that would give certain children of illegal immigrants a way to become citizens if they pursue a college education or military service.

Immigration, he said, offers the U.S. a chance to maintain a youthful population in contrast with the aging of Europe and Japan.

Powell also said "fringe" elements on the right are taking a low road when they label Obama a foreign-born Muslim and peddle other false theories about non-American influences on the president's character. Obama was born in the U.S. and is Christian.

"Let's attack him on policy, not nonsense," he said.

And he said the tea party may not become an enduring force unless it moves beyond slogans and promotes an agenda that people "can see, touch and actually believe in." It's not enough, he said, to call for goals that most Americans support, such as controlled federal spending and adherence to the Constitution.

The former secretary of state said he still sees Obama as a transformational figure, if one who has lost some of his ability to connect with people.

Powell said he's not giving up on the GOP, even in the face of a rightward drift, and says it might actually help Obama if Republicans win the House in November and gain responsibility for driving policy, not just opposing Democrats.

Haven't other politicians and public servants (like judges) been
brought to task for using illegal workers? Of course they didn't
'fess-up to the transgression until after they were caught by
someone with an axe to grind, but should that matter?

And the thought of a Republican win in November actually
helping Obama is intriguing ... or just political hooey. Can
    the
Party of NO really put partisanship aside .. after the
Dems have shown they can't? Talk the talk but don't
walk the walk! Have we come to the beginning of the
end, or the end of the beginning?

"Americans" don't do these essential jobs because they don't have to.

My point in this regard is: Is Powell breaking the law(s) and, if so, should he be held accountable?

I used to like Powell, and I wish he'd have run for president back then, and I think he might have won, and then at least we'd have a 1st "black" president we could be proud of. But today, he has turned left wing. I do still think he'd be better than who we have now. Illegals do the jobs because they are hired, and often work for lower wages and under the table. A legal citizen would not do that, well, some would, if they had to. His comment is like saying criminals help the nation by keeping our police and prison industry in business.

Exactly, but criminals and their associates pay a price for breaking the law.
Powell is breaking the law willfully so why shouldn't he be held accountable?
Maybe the laws should be changed, but until then they should be enforced
(or not) equally across-the-board. Discrimination, in these instances, should
          be illegal.

I've had contractors bring illegals here to work on my house too.

He's right, republicans should not become anti immegration. As far as I have seen, they are not anywhere near being anti-immegration, they appear to be against illegal immegration.

I don't feel anyone represents my interests here. I don't say kick out all the illegals, and I don't say just give amnesty into infinity. We need to allow illegal immegrants who are here the ability to prove that they have been gianfully employed and not getting into any criminal trouble in order to get a greencard. Additionaly, we need to make it easier for people to immegrate here legally, 7 years and thousands of dollars is not a reasonable expectation for people from south america. We need to allow workers in, but anyone with a criminal record needs to be out. Once we have made all illegals looking for work legal, we need to have a 0 tolerance policy on crime. As in, if you are an illegal alien and get caught in a crime, it's right back to mexico, no chance of visa in the future. We need to lock down the border after this is all done.

Basically, we need to allow people looking for work to come here, but we need to keep out the criminals, which make up a sizeable amount of the illegal immegrant populace today. I mean just the basic shit that every other country does, but America is somehow racist for wanting the same thing.

I've got a good one for you...

A few years ago, I had a landlord who was so cheap he hired a fly-by-night
outfit to vinyl-side his triple-decker ............ in the middle of winter.

The kicker was when the crew showed up without warning to the tenants .....
..... during a major snowstorm!! Somehow, they got the scaffolding up and
actually vinyled over the snow with no vapor barrier. Turns out the Columbian
crew spoke absolutely no English. But they did get the job done.

Were they illegal? Why would you think that? Even in uptight Myassachusetts
it seems no one cares ........... hell, they're not Mexicans!

We had a hail storm two years ago which wrecked a few of our windows. Because a couple of them are 40 ft. up almost every contractor wanted an exorbitant price to rent a cherry picker. Except for one. They sent a couple of Latinos with a huge 40 foot ladder (and they did a good job)

Contractors also brought them in when we redid our flooring.

Were they illegal? I don't know, and don't particularly care.

I noticed in East Euro that materials for whatever project were 2-3 times more expensive then in the USA but actual contracters were dirt cheap.

Here we have cheap materials but way overpriced, union, high profit contracters.
This is where illegals in a odd way correct the market and will save you a bank loan for the same job.

Exactly, they exist because without them the market makes a huge sucking sound to fill the vaccum created by a lack of affordbale labor.

My mom paid an american moving company $4,000 to send some college kids with a truck down to her place and move her 1 bedroom apartment. I recently paid some mexicans 10$ an hour for a few short hours, plus the cost of a uhaul truck to move our entire restaurant to a different city where we did a festival at a major theme park. It would not have been profitable if we paid americans to do that.

This is why they are here. Because their idea of a "living wage" is not a house, 2 cars and a boat like some union employees in America. I hire illegals and I don't care who knows it.

Exactly. To pay a union contractor to do somethign involves a team of scientists, heavy equipment and a whjole lot of scheduled breaks and short work hours. Juan, who is trying to make a living in a new country, will gladly come with a buddy and make it happen NO MATTER WHAT for roughly $10 an hour. I am not so overly nationalistic that I am going to waste hard earned money for no reason. Thesed people are hungry and willing to put in work, and that my friends is what America was built on.

Referring to Colin Powell as a moderate Republican is increasingly meaningless. Since Obama was elected his conservative bona fides, never very impressive, have faded quickly into essentially straightforward Progressivism. If he is so intent on bringing illegals "out of the darkness" then he should lobby congress to have immigration quotas raised sharply, not by rewarding lawbreaking by "amnesty" or some other equally misguidedly euphemistic scheme. If his Democratic pals wanted to they could steamroll such legislation through the legislatures just as they did universal health care. They will not do this because they are running scared since polls indicate they are facing a bloodbath in November and the public has already had a gutful of such naked pressure politics and generally do not support amnesty and would like the feds to enforce the laws on the books.

If what illegals do now is so crucial to our economy, which I do not believe for a second, then those in power should raise quotas enough to accommodate everyone who wants to come from Mexico to suck at the gravid American teat. Better that than by trying to change millions of illegal's immigration status by waving a wand and declaring them no longer illegal. That path essentially sends a hearty f**k you to the millions of people from people all over the world that have done things the right and legal way. Keeping the cost of Colin Powell's kitchen remodel down is hardly a decent justification for protracted official winking at the flood of illegals over our southern border in the last few decades.

There are still areas where these jobs are still done by non-union Americans. In many cases, they are better than the contracting company hiring illegals or the union workers.

Very true! I have found some great people off of craigslist. Of course you have to be careful and only pay once the job is done. In most cases you can cut the cost in half if you take the time to look.

Those big contracter companies with half the employee's being sales predators are the worst one's.

We have had about 5 people randomely come by the house trying to schedule presentations for new windows.
