It's Official: I Have Leukoplakia

I was at the dentist today for a routine cleaning and my dentist asked if I chewed tobacco. I said yes, and he gave me a dirty look. He then went on to say I have leukoplakia, and it might turn into cancer someday. I went on to tell him that snus doesn't cause oral cancer, and he said it was complete BS. As well, he said the fiber glass in tobacco is what degrades gum tissue. Hahaha.

As with the leukoplakia diagnosis, I'm not too worried. Studies have shown that cancer resulting from leukoplakia in snus users DOES NOT turn into cancer.

Sorry to hear that snusjus. How does "cancer resulting from ..." not turn into cancer? Isn't cancer cancer? Lol at the fiberglass. That sure adds some weight to the diagnosis... But really, I'll have to research this condition because I'm not familiar.

Man I am so sorry to hear the news. I hope the issue will mend in time and that you will take all the necessary precautions to insure that it does.

It seems I remember you posting some about using American dip (not that I am trying to give snus a free pass here at all) but from personal experience................American dip and chew would be the first things to go.

Also, if my dentist said "fiberglass"................I'd seek a second opinion....................not hoping to get a different diagnosis..................Rather hoping to get an informed one......................followed by an informed approach to restored gum health.

As long as you are treating fiberglass................you are not treating the issue behind the problem.

Which type of oral tobacco has caused this? Does this mean you will have to quit tobacco?

My current dentist is a tobacco Nazi and she always balls me out about the tobacco stains on my teeth and is convinced I'm a heavy smoker.I wouldn't even get into talking to her about snus as I'm sure she would say it's highly cancerous and full of fiberglass, yeah right

I was reading on the net this condition can also be caused by alcohol as that's an irritant as well as tobacco. The article also mentioned that beta-carotene is recommended for this condition...

I wouldn't worry about it. It might look weird to someone examining the inside of your lip(!), but that's about it. If you're really concerned, quitting snus will make it go away.

Yea, pretty much. I'd consider the jury out as to whether or not it causes cancer in ANY case, but even if it did in a very small number of people, the number is still very small. There's more important things to worry about in life :^)
