I've had awesome results with Xylitol toothpaste such as Spry 2x a day as well as a few pieces of Xy gum throughout the day, normally a spearmint gum while enjoying a spearmint portion. I avoid any harsh 'whitening' toothpastes as these CAUSE recession, according to my dentist. Also use floss, tongue scraper and a homemade Xylitol mouthwash everynight. Absolutely no recession and I haven't been waking up with horrible morning breath since I began. Do some research on Xylitol...

I pretty much permanently have a sterk in.
If there were any problems with snus I'd be the first to air it.

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I don't floss either Tom. I just can't bring myself to do it. I too have recession problems that began well before snus, and also have to do possibly with a combination of genetics, smoking, and vigorous brushing. And LX, very serious gum recession DOES cause very serious problems -- your teeth eventually fall out.

I've always hated flossing, I'm absolutely terrified of going to the dentist, as ridiculous as it is, and like you said Tom, I used to brush the shit out of my teeth; hard and fast. I recently picked up a Sonicare and now I'm taking things easy. My teeth look good to the casual observer, but a real close look is showing an exposed root or two. The snus is not helping with all that, I can say that for sure. Not trying to be negative, that is just my personal experience. Everyone's mouth is different. I need to floss.

To the OP, not to state the obvious, but drink tons of water and keep some by your bed. I drink absurd amounts of water. I love water. Ice cold water in the middle of the night? Almost better than beer after work! Almost.

The thing to remember is that really aggressive brushing can damage your gums too, so don't over do it just because you're worried about your gums, as it might have a detrimental effect. Gentle and thorough is the way to go.

I have sensitive teeth, which is caused by natural ageing related gum recession (hence the phrase "long in the tooth", trivia fans), and my dentist showed me how to brush my teeth to cope with it. The trick is to brush away from the gums edge. It does make brushing a bit more laborious and time consuming, but by not putting upward pressure on the gum, it helps prevent further recession.

Hope that makes sense, it's hard to explain without a demo like I was given.

Sure, but I've never heard of very serious recession due to snus. I meant typical recession everybody gets.

The worst you'll get is some temporary staining which dissapears when you brush, and maybe some bad breath.

I just make sure to brush my teeth three times a day, and I keep an extra toothbrush in each vehicle for quick "touchups" when out in public.

When I was young I dipped Skoal and then I started smoking, as a way to try and quit smoking a few times in my life I went back to dip. The trouble is it always jacked up my mouth. Snus doesn't have any effect on my mouth, and I would notice, I have spent a lot of money at the dentist as bad teeth run in my family. All my front teeth are crowned and if there is any staining from my snus, it brushes off easily.

So other than the obvious health effects like increased bp and such, I dont worry about my mouth because of snus.

Tom, try to look for Tom's of Maine toothpaste. They have a bunch of fluoride-free pastes. They're expensive, but they're tasty. I especially like the Mango and the Anise ones. I'm back on Aquafresh for cost purposes, but I treat myself to Tom's of Maine on occasion. I also have a Sonicare brush. That thing rocks the house.

I read that fluoride hinders weight loss. I don't know how much brushing your teeth will effect that, but who knows. I still think that it's a good idea to use a fluoride toothpaste. Flossing sucks for the first week or so then you feel you've got to do it. I stopped recently but now I feel I should start again...all-in-all the mouth is good for now. I won't say too much and jinx myself. Now would not be the time for tooth problems. I hate tooth problems.

Toms of Maine is the shit. I have about 30 tubes in my cabinet :^D BigLots got a bunch in stock a year or so ago, and I stocked up. I like the anis/fennel and Gingermint the best.

Hey you guys that don't like to floss. I was the same way for most of my life. But I forced myself to do it once a day when I started snusing. I've since stumbled on this brand of floss picks and now I love to floss. They are slick and smooth and easily slide between even those really tight spots. I highly recommend trying them:

All about the Curaprox brushes. Those Swiss guys know what they're doing. When I go back to a regular toothbrush it feels like I'm brushing my teeth with a yard brush.

Ps. Make sure your toothpaste contains triclosan also as it kills bacteria below the gum line.

I started using floss picks when I had a broken elbow and only one hand to floss with. There are generic brands that cost less and work OK, too. Still using them even though my elbow is healed because they're so easy to use.
