New research shows that cigarette smoke causes damage in minutes.

Smoking causes gene damage in minutes
    1 hr 27 mins ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) – Those first few puffs on a cigarette can within minutes cause genetic damage linked to cancer, US scientists said in a study released Saturday.

In fact, researchers said the "effect is so fast that it's equivalent to injecting the substance directly into the bloodstream," in findings described as a "stark warning" to those who smoke.

The study is the first on humans to track how substances in tobacco cause DNA damage, and appears in the peer-reviewed journal Chemical Research in Toxicology, issued by the American Chemical Society.

Using 12 volunteer smokers, scientists tracked pollutants called PAHs, or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, that are carried in tobacco smoke and can also be found in coal-burning plants and in charred barbecue food.

They followed one particular type -- phenanthrene, which is found in cigarette smoke -- through the blood and saw it form a toxic substance that is known to "trash DNA, causing mutations that can cause cancer," the study said.

"The smokers developed maximum levels of the substance in a time frame that surprised even the researchers: just 15-30 minutes after the volunteers finished smoking," the study said.

"These results are significant because PAH diol epoxides react readily with DNA, induce mutations, and are considered to be ultimate carcinogens of multiple PAH in cigarette smoke," the study said.

Lead scientist Stephen Hecht said the study is unique because it examines the effects of inhaling cigarette smoke, without interference from other sources of harm such as pollution or a poor diet.

"The results reported here should serve as a stark warning to those who are considering starting to smoke cigarettes," Hecht said.

Lung cancer kills about 3,000 people around the world each day, and 90 percent of those deaths are attributable to cigarette smoking.

The research was funded by the National Cancer Institute.

So I guess it's definitely too late for us, we're all gonna die!! The funny (pathetic) thing is if there was any other product on the market that had the same damage as cigarettes they would be pulled immediately from the market lol

It makes sense. There are some people who get lung cancer after only a short period of smoking and other people never get it at all. I have also known people that have gotten cancer years after they have smoked. This research only shows there is no safe limit when it comes to smokes.

No surprise there. They could even make the argument snus begins to cause damage immediately, since it irritates the gums the second the tobacco is placed in the mouth. At least snus doesn't cause lung cancer.

With all the second hand smoke I inhaled as a kid I should of died years ago before even becoming a smoker.

            Tx for sharing this ...

That makes sense, still people that get cancer .... are disposed to get cancer by their genes.... actually it's been proved that cancer has some genetic roots to some extent.

I agree. My parents smoked 2-3 packs a day, in the apartment, and even blew smoke in our faces routinely.

Wow, that's an eye opener. Who would've thought that smoking was bad for you?

Betchya that study cost a bunch too. Jesus...I'm so damn cynical today. Sorry. Need more snus.

Same here, all my childhood I remember a thick smoke in the apartment, especially in the kitchen and hall way ..

No wonder I got hooked on smoking at 12 ... and smoked for 14 years ....

I guess a good warning to all smoking parents is to avoid letting their kids even see them smoking....

Kids in general tend to do what their parents do .... so you'll end up with your kids smoking in most cases..

I came from a home where both of my parents smoked as well. Times change I guess. I remember when using a child's car seat meant sitting in your moms lap.

                        Yep, I remember that.
It wasn't that long ago that if you crashed your car, the steering wheel would be pushed into the drivers compartment and smash your face to smithereens - the days before the steering column was designed to collapse. Depending on how high the steering wheel was in the car, fire crews would have to cut the steering wheel from peoples ribs.
The world is on the look out for "safe" - some of it good and some of it overkill.
Lets face it - we were on the lookout for "safe" in a way by using snus. We already knew in our minds that smoking really was pretty unhealthy.

I am really glad about car safety features but have you seen the warning labels on ladders and buckets these days? They are plastered all over which is definitely overkill. I really wish they would come up with one label that says something like "Use Common Sense When Using This Product" and just use that for everything from cigarettes to cars.
