'Cancer risk of nicotine gum and lozenges higher than thought'

After reading this article and several others for the past 12 months I guess snus is the safest alternative to quit smoking.

I've used patches on several attempts, and got myself some HUGE skin rashes all over the joints...elbows shoulders ... knees.... now I'm reading this ...... as of nicotine gum and lozenges can cause cancer...... How are they even approved by the FDA if they're that risky?

Nicotine chewing gum, lozenges and inhalers designed to help people to give up smoking may have the potential to cause cancer, research has suggested.

Scientists have discovered a link between mouth cancer and exposure to nicotine, which may indicate that using oral nicotine replacement therapies for long periods could contribute to a raised risk of the disease. A study funded by the Medical Research Council, led by Muy-Teck Teh, of Queen Mary, University of London, has found that the effects of a genetic mutation that is common in mouth cancer can be worsened by nicotine in the levels that are typically found in smoking cessation products.

The results raise the prospect that nicotine, the addictive chemical in tobacco, may be more carcinogenic than had previously been appreciated. “Although we acknowledge the importance of encouraging people to quit smoking, our research suggests nicotine found in lozenges and chewing gums may increase the risk of mouth cancer,” Dr Teh said. “Smoking is of course far more dangerous, and people who are using nicotine replacement to give up should continue to use it and consult their GPs if they are concerned. The important message is not to overuse it, and to follow advice on the packet.”

Most nicotine replacement products have labels advising people to cut down after three months of use and to stop completely after six months.

This surprises me. All other research has concluded nicotine in its purest form is non-carcinogenic. As well, no link between snus and oral cancer has been found, even though it contains higher levels of nicotine than NRT products. I will remain skeptical of these claims until more studies conclude otherwise.

I use nicorette when I get a cold or something and I do remember reading something about it can cause oral irritation and you shouldn't use it for longer that specified. I would imagine though that since the nicotine in NRTs is still synthesized from tobacco, maybe the TSNA levels are higher than they should be and that is what is increasing the risk.

I refuse to believe nicotine in itself can cause cancer, untill I see some well documented well reviewed tests and studies.

This is an interesting short article on nicotine. It seems that it helps the cancerous cell grow rather than causing cancer on its own.

too much use of the terms "may" and "might" and "could". So a guy could smoke for whatever...ten years...then switch to a NRT thing and get mouth cancer from the years of smoking but the blame would get put on the NRT.

I was told I'd get hairy palms someday too...hasn't happened yet.

It doesn't say that nicotine gives you cancer. I believe that this article means that nicotine accelerates cancer in already mutated cells.

but that's what I've said about the second article...

but the first one clearly says NRT leads to cancer ..

                          Thanks for that information.

I have 10 days since I stopped drinking coffee and any type of caffeine products :^)

So there's more nitrosamines in coffee than in snus, good to know.... then I guess pancreatic cancer is more likely to happen from coffee then

I have terrible mood swings since I stopped drinking coffee and heaches ... but they should settle down in 2 - 3 months from now. or maybe even faster.

I can't concetrate properly either... but I have issues with the bile, so I can't tolerate it anymore
