Snus and weight gain after smoking?

    Hello all,

I started snusing to try to quit smoking. Currently I am a dual user (hope that will change). I have a question. When people quit smoking, they tend to gain weight.. 2 reasons I think. Filling the void with food, but also I am told that quitting smoking lowers the metabolism. So a question here. When you quit smoking but continue to snus, will the metabolism remain the same? Is it nicotine raising it or one of the other 4000 chemicals in cigarettes? I am woried about porking up.

On a side note; which brands of snus have the lowest tsna's (is that the right acronym?)

    See ya,

Well, I've lost weight since I started using snus. The reason for this is that I have snus in my mouth most of the time. I don't really eat candy anymore, and there are a lot less snacks between meals.

I read somewhere that the average amount of weight gained from quitting smoking is 5-8 pounds, which can easily be lost within a month with diet and exercise.

TSNA wise, most snus (today) contains very low levels. The average for Swedish Match is about 1.2ppm and V2 is about 0.8ppm. The difference is negligible though -- snus what you like!

Snus and some scheduling changes have all but eliminated my "snacking time".

It's mainly the nicotine that raises your metabolism, basically since it's a stimulant which stimulates the central nervous system. If you switch to snus and remain as physically active as you were when you smoked, you won't see any weight gain.

Snus contains more nicotine than cigarettes though, and can make you a bit more sedated and relaxed than the high nicotine spike cigarettes gives you, so for some people, they can get more fatigued, and thus working out less. For some it's the exact opposite though.

Yeah when you smoke it takes away the hunger, and the smoking becomes a rutine. So if you stop the rutine you have to replace it somehow and almost all people replace it with eating

Gained a lot of weight. Moved more when I was a smoker.

I never noticed any weight gain when I switched, maybe 3-4 pounds, but I have always been fairly active.

Just wanted to add to this thread; I have lost almost 9lbs (and I had a normal BMI to begin with..) since I quit cigarettes and started using snus 27 days ago. I've been cutting down food portions slightly but snus has all but stopped the snacking I was doing before. So I say snus on!

It is too early for me to talk about weight gain/loss, but one thing is for sure: snus suppress my appetite, so I'll probably going to loose some weight.

After snusing for approx a month(but smoked on the side until 2 weeks ago) I have actually lost weight - As Thraxy said, you sort of cut out candy.. I also drink a lot less soda - I used to compliment my cigarette with something else but I hardly ever do with snus(Apart from coffee) and so I cut down on a lot of the unhealthy stuff - I say, whenever you feel like eating something to fill the void take a portion or make a prilla and cram it up there.. It should take away the worst.(It also kills my before bed hunger significantly more than cigarettes did)
