    ICE HOCKEY -
The World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) has nicotine on its watch list in 2012. Not so trivial an ad. "The goal of the AMA is not to target smokers, but to monitor the effects of nicotine on performance when taken in the form of tobacco products like snus," recites the statement.

Clearly, the consumption of this product and its derivatives federations concerned. This is an epidemic affecting, especially, ice hockey (50% prevalence), but also the floorball. The doping effects of nicotine are not the most disturbing. This substance has stimulating properties - increased heart rate and blood pressure, release of sugar and adrenaline in the blood - but they are far less serious than the dangers to health, especially dental and oral.

Martial Saugy, director of the Swiss Laboratory for Doping Analyses (LSAD), had sounded the alarm in April 2010 during a press conference Antidoping Switzerland. In 2009, he had found a prevalence of 50% of nicotine in the World Ice Hockey in Berne and Zurich. "We continued this study and this rate has not decreased, it has even increased," says the researcher Vaud. The epidemic is spreading more and more.

The picture is clear: all the campaigns launched by the international federation, the League and the clubs are not enough to deter hockey players in all categories. According to various testimonies, snus - or its variant the African Makla - is present at all levels from the elite juniors or novices.

From Scandinavia, where it is consumed as cigarettes, chewing tobacco that has emerged in the 1980s. "The Swedes consumed at very high doses, sometimes half a box per outlet," said a National League player of the time."Some of my teammates tried Swiss. Me, I also consumed in and I got sick.I did most affected. "Others continued.

    Ripple effect
Gradually, snus has entered the culture of hockey. "Many are in effect for training," explained the young hockey players. "I saw in the locker rooms of the elite. Once you start, it's hard to stop. "And for good reason, a decision-snus is 10 cigarettes in terms of concentration of nicotine. "The addiction to this substance is much stronger than that for cocaine," says Martial Saugy.Hence his cry of alarm.

The League has heard and has launched a prevention campaign. The clubs have raised their juniors. "We organized an information session on this subject in 2009," said Patrick Barberon, president of the Movement Junior HCC. "We have published papers on our website ( www.hccjuniors.ch ). Our policy provides for a penalty when we catch a junior in possession of this product. The second is exclusion. "

Gary Sheehan, head coach of the HCC, banned snus in his dressing room six years ago. "We are inflicting fines on players who use this type of tobacco," said he. "I try to handle the situation in the locker room, but I can not control what happens outside. I am sure that the consumption of snus does not decrease. Ç has saddens me! To me, this goes against the ethics of sport and is also a question of hygiene. "

    Dental examinations
Because the real problem is health related. Regular consumption of this type of tobacco can cause mouth infections and even paradentoses (tooth loss), a cancer of the mucous membranes, even paranoia. A simple Internet search reveals the damage. But that does not deter anyone, or almost.

The solution? "Our research tends to show a maximum rate of nicotine allowed," explains Martial Saugy. "It is rather as a preventive measure.Another solution would be to introduce compulsory dental examinations. "A good way to combat the problem at its roots. The President of the International Federation, Rene Fasel, a dentist by trade, could address the issue.

Sure, snus is very common among ice-hockey players. But trying to prevent it? F*ck that, why not make energydrinks or caffeine illegal if they are worried about the über-performance.. This is pure propaganda from the cigarette companies in schweiz which has way too much power these days.

And as usual they put lies in their text, I don't know how hard it is to actually learn something easy as tooth loss and cancer is not caused by snus. I.D.I.O.T.S.

Ironically, the study was sure to state it wouldn't target smokers. That is completely backwards and idiotic in every conceivable way.
