This is something that many clinical psychologists, neurologists, and psychiatrists have known for a long time, but they rarely speak about it, because of the flack they get from colleagues and the anti-tobacco fanatics. They have long been aware that patients with all sorts of mental and neurological disorders smoke in much greater numbers than the general population. Most had already concluded that the patients were self-medicating, just from the anecdotal evidence. After all, if the smoking schizophrenics in your hospital regularly behave more rationally that the non-smoking ones, what else can you conclude?

It's also well-known, if not often acknowledged, that gerontologists give nicotine patches to their patients with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. It's been going on for years. Nevertheless, it's nice to see some credible research studies to back up the practice.
