Quitting smoking with snus - health improvements timeline

    Hey guays,

There are quite a few of these 'quit smoking timelines' floating about, showing you the benefits of smoking on a timescale from 20 minutes to 10 years and beyond.

    Here are a couple:
    NHS timeline
    WhyQuit timeline

My question is, how much of these benefits are retained when switching from smoking to snus, instead of completely quitting nicotine/tobacco? I guess most of it applies, but some - like blood pressure/pulse rate, blood circulation in gums/risk of tooth loss, cravings - are still a problem?

    Thoughts?

Good question. I've been pondering the same thing.

I imagine... the lung improvements still stand and the carbon monoxide leaving your body... but the blood pressure/heart things remain the same or similar. But i am hazarding a guess.

Strictly personal experience: *my" hypertension did improve when I switched to snus, probably due to other influences of smoking which stopped impacting my system. I am still on the same hypertension meds as before, though. Doctor says I should not try to stop using them, only switched from 2 different ones to a single one, so probably I am using less than before. My heart rate, which was ripe for beta-blockers, went down actually, but that was a different matter unconnected with tobacco: my doctor gave me a choice between beta-blockers and 40 minutes daily cardio workout on stationary bike. I tried the bike and it worked. Took some two years or so, but the rate went down from 100+ to 80+. With snus.

I am 28 and was a smoker from my mid teens up until I was around 22 or whenever it was I joined this board maybe later.

Other than being a sufferer of severe anxiety from past alcohol abuse, and from panic attacks where my pulse can get into the 160s, my resting pulse rate is around 60 to 70 bpm. I feel much better using snus and try to only use Los when possible and portions at work. I use Sterk Portions at work because my typical pris is around 1.5 to 2 grams which is roughly 13-16 mg nicotine.

I do not know exactly the health impacts but I know I feel 100 times better when I quit smoking and have never looked back.

I find quiting smoking is far easier to do once your body says,"OK, ENOUGH!!" I had tried to quit smoking several times before and with no success because I did NOT want to quit, just the people around me did, thats when I said I would only quit for myself.

I used snus to help combat the eventual withdrawls.

Now some would say I traded one addiction for another but for me I enjoy Tobacco, and made an educated decision to enjoy it as responsible as I could. Out of all the other methods I have tried in the past 6 or so years, from pipe smoking, to nasal snuff, snus has always remained a constant companion and has become my one and only tobacco I use.

I would think eventually there might be some negatives to using Snus in the long run, but as of now the only negative side effect of using snus is running out of it, lol.

Smoking does a number on your respiratory and circulatory system, so even if you are still getting nicotine (say from snus), issues with hypertension and circulation will still improve as you abstain from smoking.

I smoked for 40 years before I discovered snus. Smoking is a dangerous, unhealthy, ineffective method of nicotine delivery, that will have adverse effects on your health and will probably cause premature death. Smoking has also become anti-social and very expensive. Don't miss it at all.
