Smoking 'rots' brain, says King's College study

Vulpes told me about this study just in the news... (sorry if this has been covered whilst i was away)

    and/or

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-20463363

Because hither-to smoking has been seen to aid memory etc, right? So what do you think about this study? And how does this impact on snus users? Does that old age image of a wise pipe smoking philosopher still stand true?

I saw that article this morning when I was checking my mail. I was a little confused as I'm sure a little while back they were exploring whether nicotine could be used to prevent/help treat dementia. Or maybe it's smoking itself they're having a poke at

Maybe they are just trying to scare people off of smoking... or maybe smokers just spend too much time outside smoking so therefore not reading or something... i don't know.

I would DEFINATELY think its not the nicotine per se that facilitates dementia. Otherwise this article flies in the face of a shitload of contradicting studies on nicotine and Alzheimer's.

Can anyone further the discussion with some scholarly nouse? ;-)

Nicotine helps with Alzheimer's - The reason why smoking(possibly?) has a negative effect on your brain is because of the decreased respiration and hence the decreased oxygen to the brain resulting in lessened learning capabilities. Just like if you have a really bad cold and you feel like your brain isn't working properly - it's cause you can't get enough oxygen the way you're used to.

I think - I'm no scientist, but I do study a bit of biology.

You're right about nicotine and Alzheimer's, all you have to do is google 'nicotine Alzheimer's' - you're presented with a swath of scholarly articles to support this. And you could be onto something with the decreased oxygen, also smokers flood their arteries with carbon monoxide, which I guess is the other side of the same coin.

Smoking makes smokers more like non-smokers

              26-11-12
SMOKING rots the brain until you start thinking like a non-smoker, it has been confirmed.

Two years away from demanding a ban on crisps

Researchers have discovered that if you keep smoking then you will become so pathetically stupid that you think other people’s legal habits are any of your business.
Professor Henry Brubaker, of the Institute for Studies, said: “It rots your brain so much that you end up calling for fat people to pay more tax.
“Or you may demand large health warnings on bottles of Chardonnay, accompanied by a charming photo of an alcoholic’s liver.
“Then, in the terminal stages of tobacco induced brain-rot, you call for a ban on the sale of Tizer near primary schools.”
He added: “It seems that for the first 100,000 cigarettes, smokers are generally liberal-minded and tolerant of other people’s flaws. But shortly after that they become opinionated, busy-body f u*knuts.
“The nicotine has damaged their brain so much that they think the government should decide how you live your life.
“Finally – and you might want to look away at this point because it gets a bit graphic – they actively support public health campaigns.
“Particularly those depicting the sad-eyed children of people who are not members of some shitty fu*king health club.”
Professor Brubaker said that in a few extreme cases heavy smokers can even become the sort of hopeless cretins who think they have a right not to be offended.

LOL! Why try to add 15 years to the worst end of your life any way?
