I'm fairly new to snus, but have been a professional dipper off and on for over 20 years. So let me throw this out there. Neither my dentist nor the ear, nose and throat specialist (I saw for allergies) were terribly concerned about my habit. Both recommend changing dip/snus locations around. It only makes sense, if you put anything, a rock, a piece of gum etc. in your lip, in the same exact location for 12 hours a day, it will tend to irritate and cause your gums to recede. You can snus a LOT and not have any gum recession or grow any lesions, if you utilize enough different parking spots. Enjoy and relax. BTW - the ENT recommended snus over dip

NorSnuser: 10-12 portions a day 30minutes absolute max. Switch when I get pain on one side, and buy a can of American moist snuff when I have pain on both sides (1 every couple months).

Also shaddup lazer. Clean your toilet and hide your snuff.

That's how I see it too.

My lip and gums look pretty good. I've gotten the occasional lesion when I overdue things, but it clears up quickly.

No way. He loves snus. Just like most of us here.

You're the one who gets mad when someone praises snus and points out the harmfuls in dip. Nananananananana :P

I'm at about 2 1/2 years now. Occasionally I get a wrinkly lip (stressful days, or when I'm on a snus that runs out of flavor quick) but I'll admit, I usually "chew" (bite) that part off (probably some form of OCD ) - other than that, nothing my dentist or doc are noticing. I switch it up pretty randomly though - roughly alternating top left/right. I go through a tin in roughly 2.5 days or so, not sure how many portions a day that is anymore, but I've pretty much got one in from when I wake up to when I go to bed.

I agree with the lung post above, I'd rather cut out my lips then have my lungs look like that!

Just another data point (odds are we're all very different anyway)...

Over a year now and no lesions or gum recession. I do get the "wrinkle" when using a lot of los, but it goes away when I stop using it. I'm not concerned about lip/gum/teeth issues, as I just don't see the risks being nearly as problematic as smoking, and I did a lot of that shit, lol

                    Update:

The white lesion (leukoplakia) completely vanished a few months ago. Here are some of my snus habits for those who are curious:

                    * I NEVER switch sides.
                    * Most commonly, I use regular strength Original Portion snus. (General Original, Grov Original, etc.)
                    * I consume 12 portions of snus per day, on average.
                    * Each portion lasts me ~60 minutes.

If you develop leukoplakia from snus, don't worry. This condition is primarily a result of physical irritation, not cancer. People can develop leukoplakia from biting their cheek too often. If you develop leukoplakia from a high-carcinogen tobacco product, I would consult a dentist if the lesion doesn't disappear in two weeks.

So far so good here. I use mostly loose and have snus in all the time (including sleeping). The only time I don't have snus in is when I'm brushing and flossing (that's when I use nasal snuff) and while I eat (I eat really fast). I use a mix of regular, stark, and extra stark. I also smoke a pipe 1-3 times a day or a cigar. I do switch up the sides for snus but just left or right upper (two pockets only). All clear so far.

Thanks for the update and good advise. I'm glad to hear you're ok. I'm a professional, so I'm unconcerned, but your original post might have given some of the noobs concern. The teachable moment here boys and girls is move it around, often. The good thing about, even high carcinogen, oral tobacco is that you can see what's happening BEFORE it becomes a problem. I understand leukoplakia can, but rarely does, turn to cancer. The best move, is to keep it moving, but if the unlikely event some leukoplakia does form, stop, or at least stop using that spot, for a while. Give it time to disappear, but as you said, if it doesn't after 2-3 weeks, see a doc ASAP. I've read there are medications they can prescribe. The 2 or 3 guys the anti-tobacco groups always parade pictures of made at least two easily avoided mistakes. They used high carcinogen American tobacco. They put off seeking medical attention. Snus on!

I used to have an aquaintenance who would dip(alot, in the same spot) until he developed sores, Then chain-smoke until they went away, then back to dip. In a bizarre way he might have been reducing his harm(less total smoking, less total dipping), but probably compounding cancer risk if I had to guess. He was pure nicotine.

I don't ever have problems in the gum area at all. My tongue gets the punishment every 7 months and its random Ill wake up one day and I will feel like I have burnt it really bad then about 1 week later it goes away. Anyone else had that happen to them I know I can't be the only one at least I hope not lol.

You're not the only one. It happens to me occasionally. I think I have found the culprit on mine though. I believe it's from pushing the los snus around with tongue too much. The same thing would happen when I used to dip. It would usually be right on the tip of my tongue and would look like a small white bump.
