Smoking for psychotic depression but want to try snus

    Hi,
I've been smoking for a few months to cope with psychotic depression and anxiety and I was wondering, would snus work as efficiently for me? I don't think its a cure all, but smoking makes me feel better.
I appreciate the help in advance.

      Welcome want2snus!

For certain conditions the whole spectrum of alkaloids produced by tobacco (including nicotine as just one of them) work together to stabilise mood and many people self-medicate by smoking for just that reason. Unfortunately the side-effects of smoking are very bad for your health as you no-doubt know already.

Medicinal nicotine in the form of patches, gum etc... only provide you with nicotine and not the other alkaloids and it doesn't really work in the same way. If anything pure medicinal nicotine can exacerbate the situation by making you more anxious and nervy.

Snus, on the other hand, is tobacco and therefore it has all the other stuff as well. The health risks are far far less than for smoking and pretty close to those of using medicinal nicotine products. With snus, you will get the active ingredients delivered to your system in a slower way than with smoking - it takes about 30 minutes to an hour to extract most of the nicotine etc. from the snus whereas a cigarette would be done in less than 5 minutes. But with moderate use - the levels of nicotine etc. in the blood is similar over the whole day and so the benefits you may get from it will be the same as with smoking.

Of course if you are not addicted to nicotine already, by deliberately doing it you are also condemning yourself to a difficult habit to break that will cost you a lot of money over the year. You really need to weigh up the pros and cons before starting because it is incredibly hard to stop once you start!

      Cheers

Tobacco is a far safer medication than any prescription they'll give you. Go for snus, swedish snus.

Just try the snus. I have found though snus can amp the mind up sometimes but you could try it. Snus is a calmer way of getting tobacco.
To snus or not to snus. That is not the question

Hmm. Technically the dopamine from caffeine and tobacco should aggravate any form of psychosis but if your smoking I would switch to snus.

I've got psychosis and nicotine and caffeine don't really.seem to effect.my symptoms. Alcohol and all other drugs.do though... So keep them in moderation

I found nrt made me pretty unstable compared to snus and helps with my anxiety just like.cigs.do.

From what i understand a person can do quite a lot of snuss and do very little damage to their health plus it can help with depression. Exercise helps too. Aerobic kind where you sweat and breath hard. Eating healthy and having a support group of any kind, forum, too. Accupuncture can help release emotions but you get worse before you get better! I spent 1 year and 8 months making myself own a depression and keep going using natural methods after almost 20 years of anti depressant pills. I chewed nicorette during this time and had been for several years. I also was working through quitting a drinking problem of about 18-24 beers a day. Yeah. Just beer. I thought if i quit anything else id have a better chance! In the end i got back on pills. Bluck but better than a spiralling depression. Im getting off the pills verrrry slowy this year. I might end up staying at a very low dose. I started vaping last year and then read about snussing. Im hoping the snus will make it possible to eliminate the pills but i want to be realistic. Depression isnt all the same for everyone and maybe the alkaloids to be had from tobacco products arent the ticket for you. Certainly getting those alkaloids from snus is a lot better than getting them from smoking! And exercise was the most effective thing during the time i was off pills and determined to stay off. My depression was caused by just being the way i was born and also at that time by circumstantial things and alcoholism and mostly not drinking during my effort to get better naturally ( which causes even more depression, quitting drinking, even though alcohol is a depressant!) i wonder if i was snussing back then if i would have succeeded? Well. Im snussing now and doing good with less than one third the dose of the pills. And im not exercising like before. Just normal chores for home and 2 horses and too many dogs and cats. Snussing cost less money too. yeah. You could chain snus ( I couldnt! Id be a little nauseated all the time!) and be a while lot more pert than smoking and depriving your self of oxygen

Bullshit!! My father had exactly the same symptoms as this fella. He continued to self medicate with cigarettes and alcohol rather than take medication - this choice killed him at 62.
I'm convinced he'd still be alive if he took the medication instead.

Do NOT stop taking any prescribed medication.

I believe in the fact that Tobacco has medicine like properties ,specific to depression and schizophrenia.
Fact maybe you couldnt tolerate the excessive amount of tobacco needed to get the medicinal effect.

I have mild anxiety and depression, and I tell you if it weren't for caffeine and nicotine in addition to my meds, I'd go crazy. My mom pointed out to me today that the only reason I'm not complaining about the crappy weather here in Wisconsin is because I'm medicated I'm like sometimes it pays to have an antidepressent on top of caffeine and nicotine in the system. Keeps me sane.

Yeah....theres nothing wrong with "in addition" to medication but to debunk medication is wrong.
