    Interesting trip to the dentist

I had an interesting trip to the dentist the other day. I’d noticed my gums have been receding faster over the last couple of years, and I have a couple of loose teeth, but the reason I went to the dentist was, I needed two fillings.

I was told that I have a severe case of gum disease, a condition called periodontitis, she told me in the UK, there are about six cases of severe periodontitis per 100,000 people each year.

I asked her what would happen next, and she told me to go to the hospital and have an x-ray, because she wanted to see how badly my jaw was damaged, because the jaw erodes as well as the gums receding.

A couple of weeks later I was back for the fillings because the first trip was a check up, I walked in to see the lovely picture of my mouth on the monitor. I’m not a dentist, but even I could see it didn’t look good, my jaw has eroded about 2.5mm which is why some teeth are getting loose. To cut to the chase, if I look after my gums and teeth, I might have another 5 or 6 years before all my teeth fall out, and I need dentures.

Here’s the kicker, when I asked her how long this has been going on she said i can’t be sure, but it could be around 5 to 8 years. Hmmm, that’s interesting because I’ve been using snus for 7 years now, so I asked her about snus, she said, I can’t say for sure but it might have started it, or it might not. I was told to quit and I might get another couple of years with my teeth, or I might not. Well, that’s not going to happen, but I am cutting down my usage now, because I’m vaping e-liquid so I can cut down a bit.

Swedish Match do talk about it on their website, but does it, or doesn’t it? I’ve not got a clue, but I have it. Like I said I’m not going to stop, but I am cutting down a bit. I guess when I don’t have my own teeth, the nicotine can only be absorbed through my lip, or I’ll just take my upper teeth out

Fazer - I'm really sorry to hear that.

Do you think it's specific to certain unlucky people that use snus or a risk for everyone who uses? I'm only asking because I've been using a little over 5 years and I use a lot of snus in a day (mainly strong snus too) - on every visit to my dentist since then he's been impressed with the condition of my teeth and gums and the general gum health has improved since I stopped smoking.

I am starting to question my snus intake for different reasons though - mainly blood pressure.

Hope it all works out OK for you.

Oh dear, i am sorry to hear your story Frazer. You seem to be taking the news well, i am wondering if you have only used portions or los? Did you always place your snus in the same spot? Is it going to be just your top teeth that come out or the bottom teeth too?

I don't have a clue mate, but i'd say it's a slight risk for everyone who uses snus, but i always seem to be unlucky. I do think snus had something to do with it, if it didn't start, it could have speeded it up, if it did start it, then that's the way it is....

I would bet that smoking may have been the precursor to it, but also it is a very rare condition so there could be a myriad of other things that could have caused it, especially if its both the top and bottom teeth. I remember discussing it with my dentist at length as I thought I had it, he said I don't as the x-ray showed nothing, it was just tar staining in between my teeth that the hygienist quickly solved.

Maybe, maybe not, but if i had to put my money on it, i'd say it started it. If you have this on the top or bottom gums, it WILL spread !!

Or maybe Oliver Twists might be a good option Fazer as they go in your cheek?

It will spread regardless of what you do unless its treated with a rather invasive procedure (I read up all about it trust me!) even that may not halt it, i'm not saying snus may not attribute anything to it as I just don't know. I would bet that its something else that caused it to start rather than the snus though, but i'm not a dentist. Just hope that you get it sorted and it doesn't get worse mate, if you can, try and get implants over dentures, I have one from an old hockey injury where I got smacked in the gob my a hockey stick, had the denture replaced with an implant and never looked back!

I did think about that mate, but it's the cost of them. When they do come out i will try and have some snus, but i'm sure i will end up having to quit, because the nicotine absorption through the membrane can't really happen, well, i do have the side of my lip, that could work. I will get some Oliver Twists at some point, i have a shit load of snuff and pure e juice to help me out I am enjoying the snus while i still can, i guess the up-side is, it's not mouth cancer, that would be a bummer

Something doesn't seem quite right about this. I am assuming these are only "diagnosed" cases. The other 1,000 cases per 100,000 people are not diagnosed as they never see a dentist. We are talking about the UK here...

In any event, I'm sorry to hear this Fazer. If you are going to lose your teeth no matter what you do, just keep on snusing!

Is that a joke post? The jaw erodes away and i’ve lost 2mm/2.5mm already, so no place to put the implants in a few years when more has eroded away. It's past the point of no return, it's in the advanced stage, my teeth WILL fall out, and some are loose now, if you’d looked at the x-ray you’d see why

You’re not a dentist, so you’re not qualified to talk, or give an opinion about it.

My dentist said that I’m 5 to 8 years in, I’ve been using snus for 7 years, and it might be the reason, and I bet she’s looked at far more books than you have. However, you can do the math on the timing of my problem!

My mouth, my problem, I’m saying with all the bad luck I’ve had, I wouldn’t be surprised if snus started it, I love snus, and I don’t plan on quitting just yet, I just have a gut feeling about it. I don’t want this thread to turn into does it or doesn’t it cause gum disease, as nobody can say for sure, but it does have a slight risk of causing gum disease, you’d be bloody unlucky, but it does have a slight risk

lots of people in the UK get normal gum disease, but she said 6 in 100,000 get what i have, nobody is sure why a few people develop a more aggressive type, and at this stage, no cure for it. Yes, i will keeping snusing ........ for a while!
