Another important figure on our side

I just sent this letter to Prof. Brad Rodu who is a professor of medicine in the endowed chair in tobacco harm reduction research, University of Louisville.

    Prof. Rodu,

I just wanted to thank you for your work in promoting smokeless tobacco as a safer alternative to smoking. I am a 35 year old man who was a smoker for 20 years. I discovered Swedish snus in August of this year, and once I started using it I was 100% smoke free in about 2 weeks. Even though my wife continues to smoke, thus providing easy access to cigarettes at home, with snus I no longer have any desire (or craving) to smoke.

I am aware of many of the health related studies on smokeless tobacco, including the one on Swedish snus that was recently published in the Lancet. I would like to do whatever I can to help the cause for smokeless tobacco as safer alternative to smoking.

One issue that greatly worries me is the recently passed House Bill titled “Prevent All Cigarette Trafficking Act (PACT) of 2008.” This bill bans all tobacco shipments through the U.S. mail, including smokeless products. I currently live in Wisconsin where Swedish snus is not available in any stores, so I must have it delivered from Sweden. I’m afraid that if this bill passes the Senate that I won’t have access to these products. I understand that the government wants their piece of the tobacco tax, and I’m fine with that. I’m no tax dodger, but I simply can’t get snus here in WI. With the current economic situation, I don’t think that the Senate will be acting on this bill this year. However, the bill overwhelmingly passed the House 379 to 12, which leads me to believe that it will easily pass the Senate. Since we might have a few months before the bill reaches the Senate, is there anything we can do to prevent or mitigate the consequences for people like me? If there is any study that I could participate in, or any testimonial that I could give for you, than please sign me up!

Good work. I think that you could also suggest drawing up a petition and having all of us attach our names/contact info (those who choose to, that is).

I second the motion RobsanX! If you do go with the petition or, need other testimonials, I'd be willing to participate!

Unfortunately, in the current climate, tax hikes seem inevitable. Someone has got to pay for all the crap that's being dolled out in Washington....and it's going to be us!! I do hope your efforts have some positive effect, and I commend you for making them. But we've seen tobacco taxes increased at astonishing rates, because they know we're addicted to vitamin N!! It's like being able to tax heroin or meth users, but for us, it's legal! I'm not equating tobacco users with druggies, but the addictive nature of Nicotine gives these asshole, money grubbing, politicians in power a dependable revenue source! The more we shine the light on what we're doing, the quicker they will figure out a way to make us pay through the nose for it!

His reply... He sounds as frustrated as we are...

          Dear Robert,

Thanks for your email, and for your compliments about my research. Congratulations on using snus to quit smoking.
I understand your frustration with federal legislation. I wasn't aware of PACT; it certainly could have a serious impact on sales of snus. In addition, I am sure you are aware of the legislation proposing FDA regulation of tobacco. It has passed the House, and the Senate will probably pass it easily next year. As currently written, it is not very friendly toward harm reduction. Unfortunately, I don't believe that people like you or I can have any impact on Congress.

          Best regards,

          Brad Rodu

            Mongrul knows whats up! lol

It makes me laugh to see all the tax increases, and all the crap that the govmt. is doing... like my favorite...

they keep raising taxes... and keep sending more troops over to the sandbox.... wtf?!?!

and the best one... they keep raising taxes...but we still have NASA...lol... In all honesty... NASA hasn't done anything worth anything since the moon...
so at this point... they're spending 17 Billion dollars to study the effects of weightlessness on Ant-****ing... or they confirm that tomatoes grow in space... like either of those help us... lol

            *End Rant*

I believe..........that without NASAs research we would not have the satillites in space for defense, communications, etc. This world would not be the same.

.......and big brother wouldn't be able to keep an eye on us all.

I wonder what blue worms would act and look like if they were bred in space?
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

I do love the fact that nasa has done sooo much for us, don't get me wrong. (except the big brother part, lol) but at this point, maybe thay could calm down, and take a break... get the economy back up, and then resume the space tomatoes and weightless and breeding, lol

Some solutions to the problems regarding sex in space include handles, straps and bungees.
So you're only supposed to use these in space? I guess I've been doing it wrong!
