    TSNA's in Cigarettes

I can't seem to find how many TSNA's are in an average smoked cigarette. Does anyone know the answer to this? It is said that snus is low in TSNA's, but I have nothing to compare that to.

8.7ng - 312ng per ciggarette, depending on the brand. I used to smoke 30 cigs./day so my intake of TSNAs could have been 261ng - 9360ng per day depending on the brand.

SM products contain an average of 0.7ng per gram so you can say that a cigarette contains anywhere from 13 to 445 times the tsna found in snus.

Cigs also contain the following chemicals which are not found in snus:

    Benzene (petrol additive)
A colourless cyclic hydrocarbon obtained from coal and petroleum, used as a solvent in fuel and in chemical manufacture - and contained in cigarette smoke. It is a known carcinogen and is associated with leukaemia.

    Formaldehyde (embalming fluid)
A colourless liquid, highly poisonous, used to preserve dead bodies - also found in cigarette smoke. Known to cause cancer, respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal problems.

    Ammonia (toilet cleaner)
Used as a flavouring, frees nicotine from tobacco turning it into a gas, found in dry cleaning fluids.

    Acetone (nail polish remover)
Fragrant volatile liquid ketone, used as a solvent, for example, nail polish remover - found in cigarette smoke.

    Tar
Particulate matter drawn into lungs when you inhale on a lighted cigarette. Once inhaled, smoke condenses and about 70 per cent of the tar in the smoke is deposited in the smoker's lungs.

Carbon Monoxide (CO) (car exhaust fumes)
An odourless, tasteless and poisonous gas, rapidly fatal in large amounts - it's the same gas that comes out of car exhausts and is the main gas in cigarette smoke, formed when the cigarette is lit. Others you may recognize are :

Arsenic (rat poison), Hydrogen Cyanide (gas chamber poison)

A list of 4000 chemical compounds in cigs. and 599 additives can be found here: http://quitsmoking.about.com/cs/nico...ngredients.htm

TSNAs in cigarettes are the least of your worries. The risk from the burning smoke is exponentially higher than any TSNAs that are present.

Exactly, as most of these chemical compounds are formed when tobacco is burned and smoked. After having read on the subject for months, I now believe that there is no comparison between snus and smoking as snus appears to be many, many orders of magnitudes safer than smoking.
