    Personal health, PP

Hi All, I thought it might be best to open a new thread on this issue. The other thread leading to these comments was posted here
    http://www.snuson.com/viewtopic.php?t=1641&start=0

I started this new thread because, ultimately, there might be alot more info posted for all to digest concerning health and snus. If you haven't been to the link I will start by stating that we were discussing sodium levels in snus, hypertension, Blood Pressure, salt .........So far we have determined that there may be as much as 20 mg of sodium in each portion of snus. I hope this all makes sense.

I'm having some serious health problems and the last thing I want to do is quit useing snus. Its possible that the following info may help others in the future. My problem is not caused by snus but the effects on me by continueing to use snus has to be considered. I have numerous health problems other than my heart.
    Here is my last post on the link;

I wish my problem was simply hypertension or high blood pressure. Its heart failure and the doctors are scrambling to find a reason for it. My heart is pumping at less than 50% now. I have another test at the hospital on monday. Not sure when I will get results. I demanded that they let me stay home untill that test. They agreed but they won't let me do anything, and they are keeping me isolated from any form of stress. Can't drive, walk fast, lift anything. They don't even want me to cough. They want me to just sit here. And just sitting here my blood pressure averages 200/120. The lowest I've been able to get it is around 185/100 in the last week or so. I think my heart is ready to explode. I have been on BP meds and eating right for 5 years now. My clorestoral is perfect. But my health still degrades.

This is why it was so important to get the info about how many mg of sodium in snus from the other thread. If its only 20mg then I can at least enjoy a couple of portions of snus a day. This sucks big time tho.

Please don't get me wrong. I'm not the kind of guy that always says "oh poor me" this and that. I started this thread so maybe this info will help someone else in the future. And I have already gotten info from snuson that has helped me with this issue. Thanks
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

good luck, I wish you all the best, and god bless if you believe in that sort of thing.

Sometimes it's hard to find the right lifestyle/diet/drugs for you health. Some people drink like fish their whole lives and don't get cirrhosis, others smoke 2 packs a day until they're 100. It's a sad fact that it's just circumstance.

You can try harm reduction, but what if not drinking alcohol leads to a heart attack, not drinking coffee leads to falling asleep on the road... there's just no way to be sure, and I'm sure you're a mindful person who's always tried to take care of yourself.

anyway, my thoughts on the matter. live long and prosper

Ah Shit!!! 50 mg is alot more than the 20mg. I guess I have to really try and limit my snus usage down to 2 or at most 3 portions a day. Or stop eating. This really sucks. Ya know I never drank alcohol cept maybe once a month if we go out to dinner. Never did drugs cept herb. However, a big part of this is hereditary.

are you sure its 50 mg?

Yea, based on the information posted on V2s site. Sodium content is 5%. 5% of a 1g portion is 50mg.

I guess you've already explored all the diet options. You can add a lot of of flavor using herbs and spices instead of salt. Pre-packaged foods can have enormous amounts of salt in them, sometimes in surprising products.

That sucks to hear about, PP. One thing I'm interested to know.....what did your doctors have to say about you using snus? Nicotine quite obviously affects blood pressure, albeit to some people more than others.

PP, in my previous job with the onsite clinics, the attached pdf document was given to patients with high bp. Please take a look as it might be useful especially with the diet. Also my best wishes to you and your efforts lowering your bp, I've seen it done in the past and I am sure you can do it.

Thanks guys. Sal, I have been on the Dash diet for about 5 years. That pdf is good easy to read material. I giving that link to my wife. I have done alot of research on this subject. Been on the meds a long time, thought I did everything pretty much to not have any serious problems. I'm thinkin that heredity has alot to do with it. It does.

Now the question of snus.........well I located a graph that had the relative BP rates at different times from when you first put in a portion. On the graph the gradual slight rise and fall of the BP from the nicotine seemed to be ok. I check my BP about every 45 minutes [doctors orders]. My BP jumps around so much I don't see any noticable rise in BP from the snus. NO, as of yet, the doctor has no idea about my snus use. or the snuff either. Sadly, if my insurance co. found out about my nicotine use my rates would go up 50 %. I just couldn't afford $850 a month just for insurance for myself. So I may have to quit nic altogether. Keep in mind that I really only used to use max 6 portions a day. It will be easy to limit it to 1 or 2. The snuff is a whole other story tho. I have pretty much quit sniffin it. That initial nic-kick could kill me, literally. I'm doing my research. I know I will have to quit snus as well as snuff. At least untill I get my BP regulated. At that time I will have a better idea about this whole mess. Lets says that for all intent and purposes I'm now done with tobacco. But I take a snus only when my BP is on the lower side. And for the last week maybe 2 or 3 a day. It takes awhile for all this crap to sink in. I'm adjusting. It sucks tho.

What I miss most is ketchup. I LOVE ketchup. A ton of sodium and sugar in the old 57. I have to live without it. As far as sodium goes , if I don't consume my daily dose of ketchup, I could have a dozen snus portions. So its a balance thing.

I have only known of this serious issue for a little over a week. Sure I was aware of my high BP but it wasn't that high and I had meds. Things have really changed now. I'm learning...........

Really sorry to hear about your heart problem, PP. It looks like the Dash diet includes both dairy and meat/poultry, which are very high in sodium and cause a great deal of damage to the human body, especially our circulatory system, leading to all sorts of awful circumstances, high blood pressure being minor compared to some things on the list. Our bodies are simply not designed to process this stuff without suffering the consequences.

Consider a vegetarian/vegan diet. I've been a vegan for a couple of years and although it was challenging at the beginning, after a few months I was on a good routine and haven't looked back. A typical Western/American diet, I discovered, is merely a belief system that can be adjusted with a bit of persistence and discipline. Very similar to switching from smokes to snus, actually. At first it appears that nothing in the American grocery store is fun to eat as a vegan, but with some research and practice, all of a sudden a whole new delicious world opens up.

I'm not trying to preach here, and I know you didn't ask for my advice, but I'm offering it to you with good intentions backed by knowledge and experience. You don't have to completely give up meat/fish/poultry/dairy like I have, but it might do you serious good to consume them very sparingly. And then you won't have to worry about your salt consumption, unless you're pouring it on your meals.

You can contact me at any time for help if you're interested. Either way, good luck to you.

My diet has been adjusted for 5 or more years already. Actually I am on 3 diets for various medical conditions. It is boiling down to vegan tho. My wife give me a small portion of meat almost every night. Mostly fish and chicken and turkey. Once a week red meat.

Each day now, for the last week or so, I learn to change my life style somewhat. I'm hopeing that I will be permitted to have 2 or 3 snus portions a day. But my tests and time will tell.

One of my daughters is vegan, and her job is to read cat-scans, MRIs, and all that stuff. Believe me, she and my wife are on my ass like stink on shit. But its good shit. I can only do what I'm told or I get yelled at.

I really didn't want to get into all this with you folks. I simply wanted to know how many mg of sodium was in snus porrtions so I could figure how much harm I might be doing. I appreciate all the concern, You guys are my buddies and I know I can learn alot. We haven't told my mom yet. Not untill we find out why this is progressing so quicky. thank you.

The thing I worry about mostly is my family. I have good life insurance tho. Secondly, my birds, they are my friends and I love em. I need at least enough time to sell out the breeding stock and facilities. It will be very difficult to part with the breeders. My pet birds will stay in the family. And no, I'm not dead yet and hopefully I will have some years left. But those years will be very different. I have alot of things to take care of. Funny thing is......I have been preparing for several years now. But I need to pick up the pace a bit.

I'd like to kinda let this thread sleep untill next week after I get those tests done and get the results. I'll let you all know whats up and what I learn. I don't want this crap to happen to anyone so if you can learn from my experiances then I'm glad to let you all know what happens.

I'm sorry to hear about your situation PP...

If I may ask a question, how is your BP so high if your heart is only working at 50% efficiency? It seems that the opposite would be true. I'm just trying to understand.

Take care of yourself, and if you have any complications, especially pain or trouble breathing then get to the hospital immediately.
