    Vitamin supplements

    Who takes them?

Just curious. I have been really watching what I eat since I quit smoking, so I also decided a while ago that a few supplements wouldn't hurt, either.

There are two that I take daily, ATM...

B-complex: I've actually been taking this one for over a year, and I swear that I haven't been sick since I started taking them. The only downside is that they tend to circulate too quickly, especially if you drink a lot of coffee like I do. Makes your piss damn near glow in the dark, too.

Omega-3: I started taking this one about six months ago; it's one of the few that people have nothing but good things to say about. I don't like any kind of seafood, so that is my main reason for taking them. I take the purified fish oil capsules, but they leave a nasty strong fish taste when you belch, so I'm thinking of trying the flax seed version.

I used to take Centrum daily years ago, but I heard that they really aren't all that beneficial. Anyone else have any other suggestions for a good daily use supplement?

For now I take a generic multivitamin. Later I'm planning on getting Now Adam multivitamin. It's supposed to be top shelf stuff and helps out if you're lifting or exercising a lot. Just got into lifting last October, and I figure it couldn't hurt. Besides, I doubt the mess hall food is really giving everything I really need.

i take a multi pack form GNC, Whey power, L-Glutamine. Been olympic & power lifting for awhile. I take the multi vitamins after each workout followed by my Whey and L-Glutamine. I don't buy the fancy high priced stuff, its all the same.

See the "Snus and Colon Cancer" thread for some talk about Vitamin D.

I take 3 fish oil caps along with other stuff, right before bed; it seems to get "run through" before morning so I don't get tasty burps.

The ingredients of Centrum are all good things, but the problem is that they're compressed into a tablet. Many people have trouble with breakdown and absorption, particularly older people; they can surf right on through in extreme cases and come out virtually intact. Nurses in elder-care facilities call them "bedpan bullets". :?

Which protein do you take? I take some Isopure first thing in the morning and after a workout. It's one of the few that I like the taste of and doesn't kill my stomach. It seems whey protein concentrates seem to do a number on me.

my doctor told me something interesting about multivitamins when I talked to him about it 2 years ago. He said if you regularly can't eat right, they're a good idea, but the problem for other people is that having their nutrients supplemented takes away their natural "cravings" for different foods, over the long term many of them are perversely trained to eat worse.

and he was indian, so I believed him. anyway, I don't take anything and eat a huge variety of foods

The best multis are the ones you take 2-4 times per day with meals. The one I use is Source Naturals, which according to a recent study is top 5 overall among all vitamins for effectiveness. Most store bought vitamins are very low in this study.

As for fish oil, Carlson's liquid is the best and has no fishy taste or aftertaste. Two tablespoons per day instead of upteen pills. For a slightly cheaper brand, try NSI. I buy this stuff mostly through vitacost.com, and they are cheaper then most online vendors.

Deebo, you got something of a point. You probably don't really need a multivitamin if you have a good variety of decent food. Sucks for anyone who can't get it, though. Southern food + budget mess hall = fail for healthy variety. =/

I really like the Green Source Puritan's Pride vitamins. A good deal of the vitamins come straight from food sources and it has lots of added ingredients that other vitamins don't have to promote good health.

LOL. So do you believe anything an Indian tells you.

P.S. They are good doctors but I have a hell of a time understanding a few of them. All of my grandfathers doctors besides his general practitioner are Indian. I guess they are more motivated then Americans to get the degree.

Even though I don't really need to take vitamin etc (healthy and varied diet is the best multivitamin imo) ...I still do. I take a complete multivit and omega-3 fish oil. For insurance :P

Oh, and of course, plenty of Vitamin N

The protien i take is basically muscle milk but GNC's version. Its a little more fatty. Basically its sopposed to emulate the nutrition of Breast milk (but the nutrients upped beacuse we are adults).

I take a generic multi daily

I also take 2-3 Omega 3-6-9 caps a day (800mg fish oil, 150mg flaxseed oil, 200mg safflower oil)

I still get the fish burps on occasion though :?
