I can definitely relate with the snus causing massive amounts of phlegm on the back of the throat.
I guess it's just me...but with all tobacco...smoking, dip, chew, etc. I get phlegm buildup because it irritates the tissues in my throat.
Snus ain't nearly as bad as other forms of tobacco but it still occurs quite a bit and I am totally opposed to swallowing any juice that comes from tobacco. if it's doing that to my throat that easily i just can't imagine it having a neutral effect if i let it get systemic (ingesting).
I've slept with snus in but I always have to wake up in the middle of the night with a thick layer of phlegm in the throat and end up coughing it up next to my bed...because i'm too dazed/half-asleep/lazy to get up and go to the bathroom so I've tried putting a bottle next to the bed but that does no good so I stopped doing it.
Never had a choking issue though...but definitely have to hack up phlegm.
I think the nicest snus i've tried on the throat is Knox. Probe is probably one of the worst as far as I know.
edit:
the aforementioned experience with snus effect on the throat was my first stint with snus. the phlegm generated by snus, for me, is significantly lower than other forms of tobacco. it's still there, however. but i've learned to just deal with not having to spit as much and i'm not really having any real phlegm problems or stomach problems. i'm just a bit of a nancy-boy when it comes to swallowing the juice from tobacco..i find it better to spit but i've noticed a lot of the phlegm generation i had before was mainly mental as i'd let the spit irritate me...weird i guess but using snus now isn't quite the same as it was before.
