    I lived in the SFV almost my entire life. Not surprising. Most likely the illegal population plays into that somehow.

        I use a low carb protein shake, but only between sets of free weights. So many of the weight gain shakes are loaded with sugars. I am not opposed to carbs, as long as they are complex carbs. I avoid simple carbs, such as sugar. I will see what the personal trainer has to say about my diet after the first of the year.

        That seems to fit the study referenced here;

        "A 2008 systematic review of randomized controlled studies that compared low-carbohydrate diets to low-fat/low-calorie diets and found that measurements of weight, HDL cholesterol, triglyceride levels and systolic blood pressure were significantly better in groups that followed low-carbohydrate diets."

            I am planning on going on a purely carnivore diet. My blood sugar is in the diabetic range, my BP is way high, I am technically obese, and I feel like crap all the time. I just need to hit the grocery this Saturday and stock up on stuff.

              Everytime I go to eastern europe I cannot believe how rail skinny the population is compared to what they eat.
              Bacon, Ham, sausages, Butter, Smoked Fatty fish, pancakes, super fat salami type cold cuts, cheese, heavy rye breads and a lot of alcohol from daily beer and wine usage.

              My conclusion is that as a population we need to walk more and eat real food not processed garbage. It is easier said then done though. I gained 25 pounds in one year because of a sit in front of the computer job. The drive is also about half hour each way so I am sitting in a curled position for close to 9 hours a day! I eat super healthy everyday and on the weekends actually go down one belt notch from just standing and walking but by the end of the work week I feel like a bloated pig.

                I've been reading this interesting book called Neanderthin, and it shows how all our modern illnesses are auto-immune diseases because we eat crap that the body is not meant to eat. The idea behind this, is to only eat natural foods that can be eaten without technology. So, that is basically meat, some fruits, and some veges. If all you had was a pointed stick, and a rock. The diseases we have, like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, all ballooned when man intered the industrial agricultural age.

                    The reason it makes sense to me, about cancer, is in the wild, natural habitat animals don't get it, and cancer cells thrive on sugar. Starting Sunday I am going on a pure carnivore diet. I say Sunday because I need to get some groceries. I'll take pics and weigh myself, and check my BP and record that, and see how it goes.

                        I don't know all the ins and outs on the cancer-glucose link, and everything you can read one person say, you can find someone say the opposite. I just need to get my BP, and blood sugar and weight normalized.

                            I'm going to cut them out as much as I can. Just got back from the store a while ago, and stocked up on non carb stuff.

                              I run 3-6 miles a day, 6 days a week unless I'm sick. I'm not married, so I eat when and what I want, which is usually pre packaged lean cuisine meals and rotisserie chickens. I'm not a "foodie." I'm 5'10" and I weigh about 165-175 depending one whether I'm drinking or not. At one time about 5 years ago I was up to 220 lbs and could hardly move. Trying to stay away from the cigarettes makes a very big difference in my strength and endurance. Oddly, I find that not smoking decreases my need to eat since a lot of my food consumption resulted from efforts to make my overly acidic stomach feel better.

                              Next year, I think I'll be competitive enough to place in the top 5 in regional veteran class (over 50 years of age) 10k to half marathon races, and also get back into bicycle racing. Back in the 1980s, I was a regional class bicycle racer in Northern Colorade for several years before I went to graduate school.

                              Throughout, I've been a regular tobacco user and sometime problem drinker, which has been compensated for by a digestive disorder than causes my hematocrit and hemaglobin counts to be far higher than a normal individual, which greatly increases my oxygen uptake. Nicotine in any form is going to bum out your cardiovascular system by constricting your blood vessels, but moderate use of snus seems to be better than dip (which is worse than you think) and better than smoking (which in moderation is not as bad as everybody thinks). Eat more, eat smaller portions, and don't eat crap. And like everything else, if you're concerned about excercise, enjoy the snus in moderation.

                                I did 20 grams of carbs a day, (6 triscuits a day + proteins and low-carb veggies) for 4-5 months and got down to 12.5% body fat with no issues whatsoever. I have heard not everyone's system can tolerate low carb that well, however. I was advised by a personal trainer at the time, to not force body fat percentage into single digits, or health issues would result.
