    Discolored Teeth

I have noticed that my teeth are not the same bright white that they once were. I started using teeth whitening strips and they don't seem to be helping. Anyone have any ideas to help me get my teeth white again???

    (besides stop snus'N)

Try adding baking soda to your toothpaste, even if it already has some. I squirt the toothpaste on my brush, then dump baking soda on top of that. It's salty of course, but it seems to help.

I don't know if they still make it, but you could also get a bottle of Arm & Hammer tooth powder. The tooth powder's alright for brushing teeth, but the bottle when empty makes a good holder for baking soda, and it's easier/neater to apply. When the bottle's empty, fill it with soda using a funnel.

Well since I never have smoked and last year my teeth seemed much whiter I am blaming the snus. I used Camel Snus Frost for almost 9 months and I notice that they 'leak' much darker than Swedish Snus. I am worried that is my issue.

I don't have dental insurance right now, but when I do have to go have my teeth cleaned I don't want to hear, "what have you done to your teeth?"

I will keep on with the whitening toothpaste and strips, and hope to not get unnatural looking teeth.

That is a good idea, I will try that.

I'd say it's one of the hazards of snussing. They've got Tannkreme for snusere og rĆøykere (toothpaste for snusers and smokers) in Scandinavia. Brushing three times a day and using whitening toothpaste/mouthwash is about as best one can do.

yeah i think its pretty much unavoidable. since snussing ive amped up my oral hygiene significantly to counter balance the snus. however ive been slacking the last couple weeks. usually just too tired to brush my teeth before bed, let alone the whole floss/mouthwash bullshit routine.

To tell you the truth Christy....with lips like yours, you shouldn't be concerned or worry about your teeth. If you were my gal I think I would prefer that you didn't have any teeth at all.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I killed because they were annoying......

I've been wrong lots of times.Ā  Lots of times I've thought I was wrong only to find out that I was right in the beginning.

Thank you very much about the lips and I am sure you wouldn't even notice my teeth

                    Ugg I hate to floss...

I did brush after lunch with the baking soda trick and my mouth felt cleaner. After a while I should see some results, I hope!

Tobacco and Tobacco drip stains teeth. Pretty much /thread right here but.

-if you don't want a portion on your tooth, fold it in half length-wise and jam it up. All that matters is the drip.
                      -try mini's
-try purified portions, (I still haven't tried those yet, but its an idea)
-amp up on the tooth care, but don't go overboard or you'll end up screwing your mouth up more than what snus can ever do.

                        Thoughts:

                        1. Flossing is key! If you find it uncomfortable, get some of that super-thin, flat, no-shred floss. Or you can do what I do and use thin, non-stretchy bits of plastic... I used to always use the cellophane from cigarette packs because my teeth are really tightly spaced. But seriously, I really believe that flossing is probably more important than brushing. Cavities between the teeth are very common as you age. Note that this won't do much good as far as staining, though.

                        2. At the risk of sounding a little weird... I have found that if you wipe off your teeth in the area right after removing a portion, it seems to prevent staining. Just grab a napkin or a bit of toilet paper and wipe off the tobacco residue. Rinsing seems less effective.

                        3. Purified portions, mini portions, long portions (01/02) and white portions seem to produce less brown stuff. Also, Swedish Match portions produce less immediate (brush-off-able) staining than V2. Thunder and Oden's ES are big culprits here.

                        4. I noticed the same thing as you did with Camel. It turned my saliva DARK brown, like dip spit, but most Swedish portions just tint my saliva a bit yellow.

                        5. Okay, I'm curious now. As a never-smoker, what got you started on snus? Were you a dipper?

Aside from a professional cleaning by a dental hygienist, any dentist will tell you that the safest and most effective (not to mention cheapest!) method is to brush with a hydrogen peroxide/baking soda paste. Just combine the two ingredients together until it is a paste-like consistency, then brush normally. After you are finished, brush again as you normally do with your regular toothpaste. Or vice versa.

Targon smokers mouthwash is also effective in removing tobacco stains. Still, a peroxide/baking soda paste is safer ā€“ and better.

Be very careful using over the counter whitening products. Over the long term they tend to do more harm than good. Many people tend to overuse these products over a long period of time ā€“ and that *will* lead to enamel damage.

Whitening toothpastes contain very harsh abrasives; most dentists advise against using these long term. If you insist on using a whitening toothpaste, I suggest you only use the less abrasive ones. Arm & Hammer makes a relatively mild baking soda-based whitening paste.

Really, the best thing you can do is to floss regularly and invest the $1.75 or so in a box of baking soda and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide. You can waste a lot more money than that on products that are a lot more harmful and much less effective.

OK I do wipe my teeth. That is how I noticed that the Swedish wasn't as brown as the Camel.

I fold them, no matter what. I don't like them below my gum line.

I use mini's mostly, the only larger portion I use is Thunder Frosted twice to three times a day for the extra kick.

I should try a purified, but I am a mint fan, does it come in mint?

I am so lazy with my mouth, I know better too. Off to brush
