I tend to think the low-carb approach is best, but I want to try a low-fat 20g or under approach with no flour and sugar.

There are many low-carb diet plans out there but for me it was a mix of the new Atkins/Mediteranean/south beach.

Old Atkins and Paleo seem a little too heavy with high fat protein and limiting/excluding lentils, beans which I tend to like.

The Ornish good high carbs/lowfat is also proved in some studies to reverse heart disease but he has also recently added fish/oils which is closer to the Mediterranean diet.

Mediterranean is probably the way to go but is very time consuming to prepare.

The most intense results I have ever gotten from any type of "diet change" was a more vegan approach. I did a vegan "fast" experiment where for the month between Thanksgiving and Christmas I ate pretty much strict vegan, with no exceptions. In that month I dropped 15 lbs. Now on me, I am 6'5", to keep the numbers round I started around 230 after a gluttonous thanksgiving dinner and ended at 215 on xmas eve where I indulged again.

Over the xmas through NYD week I ate well, not crazy but not any rules on myself and then after NYD I went back on a diet that held back on meat and dairy. So for about 3.5 months I was trying to eat max 4 servings of meat a week (typically poultry and seafood) and avoiding direct dairy as much as possible. By direct dairy I wouldn't drink cows milk or eat cheese, but if say a bread item had some egg or milk in it as part of the dough I wouldn't get all uppity about it.

Well in that time I gained back half of the weight I lost. So just recently I got back on the more strict vegan. But I still end up with on the rare occassion no choice but a small serving of meat. I live with others not eating like this so there are some compromises when on a budget you must make, but still I have maybe had 2 small meat servings over the past 2 weeks.

Now for me this was the best choice as I really felt better eating more vegan. It really wasn't a animal activism reason, it was a health decision and that I literally could tell I felt worse after eating meat and dairy. Everyone is different so if this doesn't describe you then maybe this isn't the best choice.

My next step is to work on getting the chip addiction down a bit more, and I never had a sweet tooth but it is hard to find an alternative to soda, even diet sodas. Maybe I will go back to seltzer and juice mixes. I already drink my coffee black and my tea with a touch of Honey. I consider honey a vegan enough product for my purposes.

Anyway here are some things about a vegan (or to not ruffle a real vegans feathers a more plant based diet). First of all it will limit conventional "quick" choices. Most fast food places you can get F*** all there, especially if it is drive thru fodder. Although my personal favorite under this diet is Moe's Southwestern, get their Veggie (Art Vandalay) burrito with no cheese and add guacamole (I will pretend there is little to no dairy in their quac). Tofu is great and all, as are boca burgers, but I try not to depend on the substitutes too much so I cook a lot with beans.

This really might not be the way for all but it has its pluses, at least for me. If you have any "movement" issues, well these might change them for the better. The good fiber intake under such a diet is awesome. If you make all your grains whole grain options that helps as well. The big thing to do is just veggie and legume load. They really take care of most of your needs if you can do it.

I made a plan this weekend already to have a beer and pizza bash, with my buddy, who bought last time, so I wanna do it, but next week, I really wanna change my diet, and do the low-fat vegan with no refined carbs, and see how that goes. It's not just about losing fat for me, it's for getting my health together, becaue it's failing in many ways, along with me feeling like crap all the time.

ya know.. now that i think about it. when i started using snus is around the time i really started to lose weight too... not saying snus is the next big diet plan or anything.. but i quit smoking was able to workout and jog without coughing up a lung, it curbs my appetite and the boost of vitamin N helps too.. i was at near 350 lbs when i first started.. down to 257 now... which seems pretty good to me seeing as i am 6'6" so i am happy.

It takes work to find fatty foods on a vegan diet, especially if you are cooking from scratch. Your typical fat sources are going to be in the form of legumes. I will mention, I greatly prefer Almond Milk over Soy Milk.

Seriously as a tip, try doing it in phases if you are thinking of trying more of a plant based diet. First cut the meat and dairy, that alone is a big shift. Once you got the hang of that pull the refined carbs, then if you still want more then go for the low fat as well (although plant based out the gate is lower fat than most diets). On a mention, most refined carbs aren't vegan. For example you mentioned the pizza, ok Pizza dough passes but most everything else doesn't, not the cheese, and definitely not any meat toppings. Most other refined flower bakery items have milk and or eggs or both in them, pancaked and waffles will be out as well as pretzels.

Vegan on it's own cuts a lot of the refined carbs from the beginning. Although if you want to go farther there are discussions out there about non-gluten vegan diets that might offer some good info.

I have heard that extra weight will aggravate or cause heartburn. For about ten years my weight would fluctuate between around 170-185 and I used to have more trouble with heartburn when I would get up over 180. Since I went from 185 to 150 last year I haven't had any heartburn at all.

I agree, it is that inner fat that pushes food up your stomach through the lower valve in your esophagus.

Have lost 8kg (sorry, I just don't understand the lbs system) in 3 months, 1kg more and I'll get 8 as the first number on scale, haven't seen this for a veeeeery long time. Actually I don't know where all this fat has gone, little less eating and more using my legs instead of public transport or car to get around the city has done the trick I guess. Started running today aswell, to speed up the process and somewhere next month I'll try to start going to gym to build some muscle too. Sad thing is that all the clothes are starting to get too big, but more energy and better looking compensates that, I'm sure.

                      1kg = 2.2 lbs so 8kg is 17.6 lbs

I have a big sweet tooth so it keeps me away from the candy and Little Debbies and other odds and ends that I would normally be eating throughout the day without any thought. (Big thanks to things like Discreet for when I really want a candy) Since I was so excited about seeing the weight come off, it gave me incentive to exercise more, too.

As a side note, I brought my grade average in school from a C to an A. It makes concentrating on homework so much easier.

Has anyone else experienced "healthy" side effects from snus usage?

One month ago, I quit smoking 2.5 packs a day, quite drinking (almost a 5th of VO per night, every night), changed my eating habits, and started working out. How was this possible? My year old snus stash I dug out of the bottom of my freezer! I'd bought most of it right before the PACT act hit, but rarely used it. Since I never associated snus with drinking, it was fairly easy to drop both habits at the same time. Snus doesn't kick off the urge to drink as bad as smokes did. Once my lungs cleared up I was able to start walking/running and working out at the gym. I've now retrained my brain to think snus after waking up, with coffee, while driving, traveling, during workouts (hehe), etc. The result, I've lost 20 lbs (9.9 kgs), am up to 5 mile walk/runs, and have lost 3 inches on my waist. I'm eating 6 times a day, 100-150 calories per meal. No bread, rice, potatoes, junk food etc. Fresh veggies and lean meat in small portions. Good fats. That's the ticket. Blood glucose dropped back to normal range, blood pressure is also almost back to normal. Not quite off the meds yet, but they are reduced. My wife thinks I was beamed up to the mothership and given an anal probe by alien health nuts from the planet WTF!
A month ago I could barely get up the stairs of my house! Taking a shower would wear me out. I was exhausted all the time. Not any more. Snus, and a lot of determination, gave me my life back! I'm in my late 40's, so this isn't easy...but it's possible.
