    science of the nic-ups?

So, it's not that rare for me to get hickups from strong snusing or chain snusing. What's bizarre is that I didn't really ask "why?" until now.

Since anyone can get hick-ups for no reason at all, and I used to, I wonder why I(And others) are more likely to get them while using nicotine. There's nothing in nicotine to indicate that effect except anecdotal reports.

    Could be:

Swallowed tobacco juice is still being absorbed in the throat and causing irritation/stimulation/constriction of throat muscles

Over stimulation of gastric inhibitory polypeptide receptors which causes a mock anxiety of hormone imbalance which in turn causes hiccups.

Excessive nicotine consumption could cause build up of the toxin in the kidney. Concern would be Uremia which causes hiccups.

    Just throwing it out.

I used to get them when I smoked. But only when smoking in cold air, right after I ate. I do get them with snus from time to time.

My cure for hiccups is take a huge breath and blow it out as slow as possible. You will continue to hiccup but continue this process while also going into a "I dont care state of mind" and they will go away.

I used to get them when I smoked too.
But for some reason, it happened ONLY when I smoked Marlboro Lights.
Any time I smoked those, I would get halfway through the cigarette and then with every hit I would hiccup and only when I was taking a hit.
          Weird.

I think liandris first and second explanation are the most likely.

I only get them from sterks, or chaining regular snus.

I read on a pipe smoker's forum that there are 2 nerves that run down each side of your chest and abdomen. These nerves control the diaphragm (for the anatomically challenged, that's muscle that separates the chest & abdomen). Hiccups are spasms of the diaphragm, and for some reason, the nerves controlling the diaphragm are very susceptible to nicotine.

O, I've picked pipensnus's explanation as most likely, because it's simplest and easiest to remember

My observation on the subject- I get niccups 80% of the time when having a portion. 0% with los.

Come to think of it, I believe I've only gotten them with portions also. Not 80%, more like 5%, but never AFAIK with lös.

I sometimes get them when I chain snus Ekstra sterks, hate them too. I attribute them to my over use of nicotine. I don't need to understand it to know I hate it, lol...and that too much nicotine is what is causing them, because that is ALWAYS the common denominator.

When i had my first ever US Cmale snus i had niccups, used to get them whe ni was susing nicorette lozenges. I have had them on occasions when an ES like thunder gets a little juicy. Also if i have a Stonewall it'll happen almost everytime. Best way i've found of stopping them is take a decent sized drink of what eve liquid i have at hand.
